its not fake, google for it. every HP scanner newer than 4 years can do it via a special driver command.

Yeah, that's exactly it, that scanner was just sitting there, since it didn't work anymore. So it instead became a 10 minute novelty

Hold down the SCAN button while the scanner is powered on. On some, like my SCSI 5P, it has to be set to SCSI ID 0. It does not need to be connected to a computer, though.
