To listen to any of Penderecki's compostitions and not to think of the shining is almost impossible I mean the soundtrack to that movie stands out more than anything besides Nicholson's epic performance and the amazing directorial effort that Kubrick put forth in this classic film Penderecki is my all time favorite composers his compositions are just so damn haunting it can fit into a lot horror movies of the past and some present day horror flicks.

An excellent performance! I'm a violist & I know this piece, & her playing is top-rate. Her sound is beautiful & expressive, the articulation is precise, & the intonation is accurate-- admirable given this is a live performance of very difficult material. Her posture is weird, but who cares? Because of the inherent awkwardness of playing viola, many great players have unorthodox solutions to the technical challenges. What matters is the result-- & this is a truly great performance!

Dude, Bashimet is like my new hero! But, God i get so frustrated with the fancy camera work. It's awesome how the orchestra follows the Bashimet and Vengerov without a conductor, but the camera didn't once focus on the concert master. I was hoping to see more communication between Bashimet, Vengerov and the concertmaster but the camera kept focusing elsewhere.

one of the best violinist team up with the best Violist.... I found that Bashment almost never perform from memory?? anyone notice it? I was there at his premier recital in USA some 20 years ago at New England Conservatory (boston), he played the whole recital with music. He did that for almost all his performance including those with major orchestra. As great as him, does he has problems remembering scores??

In a way the camera work echoes the communicative ambient onstage - two soloists rather than a dialogue. I love at 3.25 - Vengerov finishes his passage rather brilliantly and flashes a glance at Bashmet, it seems to me expecting some kind of smile, or spirit of fun, but gets a stern face from Bashmet - Vengerov does an almost imperceptible double take, as he checks to make sure ! Bashmet doesn't look like a lot of fun to work with, and the result is a little like two cockerals in competition.

Wow - that's SO interesting! Vengerov's playing style actually makes Bashmet's style sound introverted! A real shame the cameraman couldn't just film from the front and capture more of the interaction between the two though. One of the chief beauties of this piece is the way the two soloists have to communicate and mirror each other's phrasing during the performance. I've heard that aspect balanced much more thrillingly than this, but this is lovely nonetheless.

I would also like to amend my post a little: I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this. Bashmet is god. =]

the person playing directs :) it happens quite often, although it is usually done with smaller orchestras for pieces such as mozart, beethoven etc. it is in many ways probably better this way as it forces the orchestra to actually listen to, pay attention to, and follow the soloist, and gives him the chance to impress his, how to say, musical ideas up the orchestra without the influence of the conductor.

thx for keeping me update about mozart's unfinished work for Violin, viola and cello. Wonder if there's any way to see the score even it is incomplete?? Bashment is amazing. I was there when he played his first recital in united states. I was a student at New England Conservatory and he played his first recital at our school. Wow This is bad. Bashmet doesn't play loud enough, and he's weird at conducting. The song is 13 minutes long. Either it's severely edited, or they just cut out a lot of stuff durring the preformance. Watch the Issac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman version. That's the way it's supposed to be.

i love bashmet's playing and i like vengerov's too, but bashmet conducting just looked rediculous, especially since he conducted with him bow. Also, watching Bashmet stare at the music , it was like he was sightreading. finally, having focus on vengerov staring at bashmet just feaked the shit outa me

To my taste this performance is rushed and seems under-rehearsed.Vengerov's facial gymnastics seem self-regarding, cloying and ultimately distracting from the music. 4:30 is a perfect example. He looks like he just came in his pants. Who knows, maybe he did.

I wonder if it's possbile for Bashemet to not conduct. I mean,....come on. It looks pretty bad. How much spot light and recognition does want. Vengerov does an awesome job. So does Bashmet. I would have kept things in the same era as it was written, than making it so romantic. And wow does Bashmet ALWAYS decide to change the tempo here.

He's just right, IMO. It takes a little more strength to get the full sound out of the note on a viola.

yeh, i cant understand how he could possibly play the opening theme the way he did , i wonder what the orchestra was secretly thinking haha. maybe it was a big fuck you to everyone, or maybe i just listen to zukerman to often. although the sound he can create always amazed me, i thought he was useing a mute when he started playing!

Hi, everyone! I'm a bassoon player, and both versions are awesome, but if I'm not mistaken, the original was for viola, the bassoon version, by Weber himself, came later! I have an edition which superposes both! The Bassoon seems to be more elaborate on the Rondo! Comments?
