The one episode I was looking forward to seeing redone was The Doomsday Machine and I have to say, I wasn't disappointed at all. The new CGI made that episode way better. I loved the flyby shots of the Enterprise firing the phasers at the machine. Very well done. As for the rest of the series, for me it was okay here and there for the CG. Didn't care for all of it, but a good majority of it was well done.

...could tell they were only models though. And the only other alien space ship we ever saw, was the Klingon D-7 Battle Cruiser. The episode where the CGI really worked was in the "Doomsday Machine". The Machine and the Constellation came out great. Plus the machine had more size and scale. As when the shuttlecraft entered the maw, u saw how huge the thing was! It didnt even fit on the viewscreen! But...

The Enterprise in the Remastered series looks a tad bit fake. But everything blends together, it doesnt look like a cut and paste of moving objects[like the original]. Plus the artists were a bit constrained as they wanted to get the grit and feel of the shots right. Now if they had used the USS Defiant model from "In a Mirror, Darkly, the shots could have been allot better. As that model had allot of depth and realism to it. Now most of the shots in the original, looked fake. You...

Trekie since the mid 70s, and I generally fall on the side of leaving classics alone. But one late night while channel surfing a few months ago, I stumbled across Star Trek on NBC. I thought it was awesome that they were showing it on the big network, so I started watching and soon realized what they had done, and I was BLOWN AWAY. IMO the amount of tinkering was spot on and very faithful to the original, and the end result was and is SPECTACULAR.

Much as I hate to, I agree with allen and ashes. The new Enterpris looks more like an animation and less like a real ship. The orignal may have been fuzzy, but it looked like it was made out of real materials, not computer bytes.

Maybe .. but it looks FAKE. I never remember feeling that when I watched ToS. I admire all the work that went into this and love they obviously have for the show .. but at the end of the day the shots of the ships etc just look fake. They scream CGI. There is no believability in them at all.

wel first i don't think TOS needs new vfx the once made have there charm, and i already have them on DVD, but if they are going to do it. than change everything. make 3d light aliens, 3d Transporter, cgi Gorn, Enterprise at warp speed, i love TOS as it is/was. and some cgi looks good. but it feels a bit like half a job. great that they keep the essence of the '60s vfx alive, but as i said i already have that on DVD. i have the HD box. but i really wanted to see the Enterprise at warp, for one.

I saw this one when it first aired, on a B&W TV in a hotel in SoCal, also my 1st airline trip, 1st trip to Disneyland. A memorable event. I like the original Doomsday Machine better. Funkier and more menacing. The new one looks more like an ice cream cone than the old one. Not sure about "Lucasing" the old series. The story is the most important part.

I am sorry. These CGI's could have been done much much better. I am also disappointed in the lack of sticking to the original layout of the scenes. Derek Dochterman did a better job at that, I think. They did such a wonderful job with 'Amok Time,' and 'Immunity Syndrome.' They should do this one over. I know it is hard work, and it is appreciated. This IS the one that started it all, though.

This is one of the TOS eps. that I still have trouble watching. Likely it's William Windom's really underratted performance as the tortured Commodore Decker. I remember watching his last agony filled moments when I was a kid and running out of the living room screaming and crying. That's when my parents declared the house a Star Trek-free zone -- I am pretty glad. The episode still gives me nightmares.

I think some nerd out to sit down, and redo the effects themselves. In fact, I thikn it would be fun to ENTIRELY redesign the ships, and the shots. Would be intresting to make the Enterprise a large rotating cylinder which would explain gravity. And it would drive the purists nuts, but the hard science people like me would love it. All 2 of us.

I agree, instead of going to the original prints and doing clean up, the Remastered CGI effects Gimmick was used. Why? Because George Lucas made a bundle when he re-released re master versions of Star Wars Trilogy. Viamcom studios thought, hey, we can do that, too, sell the DVDs to everyone who purchased the VHS tapes and we can do it cheaply and make that much more money. With all the Computer processing power available they could have done better. Re do the music so we can have 5.1.

The original FX have their plus and minuses. In most cases the original Enterprise 11 foot model looks better than the CGI. CGI could have been added to enhance certain aspects of the Old model (lights, small details, clean up some of the Blue screen problems). Yes the Constellation looks somewhat better than the AMT model in Doomsday machine, however, some of the drama (Constellation starting to move) and continuity (distance on attack) was lost with the CGI.

Well, I think you make some very good points. But I believe my difficulty is that the new CGI effects look CGI. There is no question in my mind whatsoever that the CGI effects looks animated -- like a cartoon. Not all the original effects in ST succeed, but the ship, more often than not, looks like a solid 3-dimensional object (because it is...(a model)). Also, I am used to the original FX - I've been watching them for about 35 years now.

The original FX made the Enterprise look like a real ship? In what way? Most often it's blotchy, at times dark and fading in and out, the Enterprise is transparent at times in some of the episodes. We all love the originals, but I can't say the originals look better. In the remastered, Balok's ship's lights reflect off the Enterprise. Not so in the originals. Sorry, no contest. I am sure someone worked very hard on these effects, but I still say they LOOK computer generated. The old effects looked old (and yes,I know they look even worse if "blown up" to HD, which is why they re-did them) but with the original FX the Enterprise looked like a real ship - a solid object, not something drawn. I have a feeling I will go ahead and buy the originals on DVD before they become extinct. These effects are just plain yucky.

For what it's worth, I think that after seeing these new sfx that I actually prefer the look of the original effects (for THIS episode). The only real improvement was seeing a modern chronograph clock counting down. Also, aren't the phasers supposed to emanate from the glow dome on the bottom? They seem to be shooting from the rim above. Other than that, it's not that great. Thnx for the post!

there is no sound because these are the actual vfx reels done by cbsd contracted by the studio to do the assigned VISUAL work. it is not their job to splice it with the other footage and do the foley work. cbsd is concerned only with visual. for cgi it isn't too bad. to do it right you have to unplug the computer buy some lights cameras and actually build the actual objects you film. not video. it is so like paramount to take the tacky way out.

I like most of the remastered episodes. They did a good job overall, but some of the angle choices were poor, and they could've taken more liberties with showing damage. This episode and the Tholian Web were real letdowns. I expected them to benefit the most from the CG and overall they're about the same.

As far as Mrs. Roddenberry or Mr. Nimoy goes, they get point$ on the sales of DVD's, so they kind of have to endorse all this. This for me was the ultimate letdown! The Remastered project was a good idea, but on the whole it was poorly executed. There have been some nice shots in some of the episodes but they missed the mark with this one. I was hoping for a Wrath or Khan style shots, instead we got these far off views, which I feel was a real waste. They could have shown us some of the damage on the ships but we got nothing. I hope they give this another go for Blu-ray.

i like that they are re-mastering the original it adds the extra level of detail that Mr Roddenberry made shore was in the movies, however if they don't have the budget and or time to make the ship models look real then they should have tried using real models in tandem with the cgi

Made me think of fair to middling FMV cut scenes on the PS1 to be fair. Aribazane is spot on with the 'too shiny' comment - the textures are all wrong, the models lack mass - compare this with Voyager, Enterprise, BSG...hell, even the Studio3DMaxmodels in B5 had a better feeling of solidity than these...if anything, I'd say this CGI is inferior to the original models...

Why the new FX guys were so strict in recreating the effects shots is beyond me. The original episode only showed most of the action on the viewscreen because they couldn't do it exterior so why restrict yourself to their limitations? They made the effort to improve the fx and it's pointless, the Enterprise is still firing blue blobs and being hit by ugly red ones and the ships still fly around at stupid angles as if they were still on a motion control rod

Just like the use of shuttlecraft weren't used in "The Enemy Within," when the men were stranded on a freezing planet and no transporter to bring them back. I can see why there are so many of these on my local Best Buy shelf. I have to say that after viewing Enterprise's attempt at TOS, DS9's attempt at TOS, and TOS-R, I like Enterprise's take the best, DS9's second, and this cheap CGI dead last. I don't know how See B.S. Digital got the contract but it was not proven to be the right decision. At least for me. Set returned.

The CGI was horrible but for the money they expect people to pay for the sets, they really should have been better. They were nowhere near to the level that I was hoping for. There are some die hard Trekkies out there who would probably get upset about any "touching up" but the subpar special effects certainly don't help sway them over.

They've left most of the live action intact, mostly it's the space scenes. The originals will still exist in any case so if you prefer the older effects you can still see them so it's not like anything has been lost. I was hoping to see more of the D7. You can get a much closer look at it in the DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations".
