By: Crowsfan55. on 30 Nov 08, 10:17:38
well said...period...

One thing you'll notice in this song is how the band plays as an ensemble. Try to isolate on the guitar for instance, he's actually doing some nice work, as well as the drumming here (fantastic) How many bands have this much restraint? It's a group of musicians playing "for" the song. I always feel humbled as a musician after hearing something of this calibre.

Agree 100% Kiri...the most underrated band of the late 60's and 70's...almost every song they did was a "work of poetry"...(ie. "whiter shade of pale")...one of my top 5 albums of all time is Procol with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra....if you've never heard it FIND IT!!...it's awesome...beautiful...and a work of poetry... :-)

I agree KdpPhila...I hate to think it's lost forever...the current bands would never even risk a song like this? Not a big McCartney fan...but do you hear a "current band" doing anything like "Eleanor Rigby?"...

After watching/listening and before I read the comments, I was thinking how this was such a great period in music and how it's lost forever. Even the best of the current crop of bands and musicians seem incapable of pieces like this.

amazing vocals too

This was one of those definite songs from its time. Absolutely fantastic - still is and I would challenge anyone to say it isn't. Just brilliant and moves me to tears every time I hear it. Poignant and beautiful - a work of poetry.

I'm with cchight on this one - absolute shivers, especially when Gary sings that last verse!

voce inconfondibile...si riconoscerebbe tra mille!!!
By: benabz. on 13 Nov 08, 11:18:09
sand so white, sea so blue, no mortal place at all. Few songs reach perfection like this - just listen to the piano and Gary's first lines again for proof.
By: cchight. on 09 Nov 08, 17:19:11
i get shivers from that song. it's great

Although both "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Conquistador" are both wonderful songs, "A Salty Dog" is my favorite. A particularly good version appears on their "Live" album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
By: MusicDude86. on 08 Nov 08, 23:10:31
It may sound strange, but I always considered this to be part two of A White Shade of Pale...
By: debadda. on 08 Nov 08, 01:41:15
Me too. My favourite song.

Gary Brooker is definitely on the short list of the most outstanding vocalists the U.K. has ever produced. Incredible, have a DVD concert from a few years ago & he still has it intact like so few.

why as the sea?..... the poet soul, an ocean entire contains ... it is as a sea.. for in the froth and wave, a secret found in briny blast and roll...the deepest truth of the true... that the entirety of the all flows as in its currents and eddied rests... we,all, dwellers of the deep...held forever in that tempest tossed sea which ,not only the poet soul, but too the soul of God.. ...how far can sailors, poets fly?
