I totally disagree. I think Dennis was really in his element live. As a musician myself, I tended to "come alive" much more when I was playing out than when I was in the studio. I think dennis was the same way.

He's in it, behind the white baby grand piano on stage left. On the other vid from this concert he gets camera time, but seems totally non-animated. I think by this point in the concert the director decided he added nothing to the footage. Seems like he was in a bad way that day and the other band mates are trying to overcompensate to draw attention away.

Ray Charles is an absolute GOD when it comes to music.....Playin the piano like that, and his voice..... Some people say that blind people have much higher senses.....Ray, he's got the touch, amazin hearing, and you can't call this a sense, but voice, and soul.... Lol at how Brian forgets that Charles is blind, saluting him at the end. Boy genius indeed! I believe Brian when he says that this is the voice he heard in his mind. It's a great, great cover (though I still love the original more). Ray Charles is 100% there, making this song his own and I bet Brian wet his pants when Ray agreed to do it... Good cover versions are the best testament to the quality of any song, and of course the best compliment to the composer. ;)

I loved it! I definitely do not think that Charles is not familiar with the song. He was a real musician. A musical technician if you will. He understood music better than most of us will. That was his gift. This was probably his take on the song. That is what music should be about. Constantly trying to find other combinations that work. No one performer should cover another's song if he is going to try to sound the same. What's the point.

Gotta defend Brother Ray's musicianship. I didn't hear him miss any lyrics, and these are demanding lyrics. Pretty good diction, too. But, he sings so syncopated and behind the beat that sometimes it seems like he forgot a lyric. Pay close attention and don't worry--it'll be there.

In '79 they performed "Sumahama" and "Lady Lynda", in 1980 "California Girls", "Good Vibrations" and "Surfin' USA" and in 1981 , without Carl, "Beach Boys Medley". They did always playback. The '79 and '81 performances are already posted on youtube, so here is a cut from the 1980 performance, I guess december.

I really wish I could have seen you when you toured with Roy Orbison back in 1964 in Australia. Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys were my all time favorite acts. Brian is on piano and Carl is singing and playing guitar. And anyone who grew up watching American Bandstand knows the performers on the show always lipsynched. It was almost always the studio recordings that played, the exception being BB king as someone else mentioned. Off the top of my head I cannot recall anyone else who didn't lipsynch.

If "true talent" wanted to appear on American Bandstand, they lip-synced. As far as I know, the only artist who appeared on the show without lip-syncing was B.B. King. The Beach Boys played live on television many times during the 60s. Programs include "Ed Sullivan" and the "Andy Williams Show." They sounded good to me.

Yup, the BB were a studio band...not that great live...there's a CD of studio mixes that will give you an ideal how they sound unmixed. However, Brian was a true genius, and his brothers and cousin great vocalists. I'm a huge fan as well.

This is right when Brian was just starting to come 'back', to composing and making public appearances. Would effectively be scuttled by late 1977, but management still dragged him out of the road numerous times. He seems less than excited here, but the sheer fact he *was* there probably made management at CBS go nuts. Also, Denny was probably thinking about the comment he made that Aretha Franklin would "scare him in the dark." Both Wilsons were so cool during their prime.

bk5612- Life isn't fair and it still wouldn't be so if Brian was dead in place of his brothers. Drugs screwed him up totally as a creative force and that was on top of eventually losing both his brothers. There was also a time when Carl was swayed by the egoist that is Mike Love and he didn't conspicuously support Brian's fragility and creativity when it was most needed. Dennis always did that for Brian but was too far out of it towards the end to help anyone, including himself.

Yeah it was somethin' else. Dennis sat at the piano in blue denim shirt; he did another number I think; probably Make It Good, but I'm not sure; it was 36 years ago. They actually did two performances at the Empire: one at 6.00pm, and the other 8.30pm. It was awesome. Ricky Fatar and Blondie Chaplin were with the band. It was the Carl and the Passions tour. Carl Wilson's first solo was "Girl don't tell me", sometime around 1965. By '66 he nailed "Good Vibrations" and from then on he did lots of leads. His voice was very important to the overall harmonies of the group. I saw Brian Wilson and the Wondermints in concert at Hartford CT in 2001 and they were amazing. This guy, Jeff Foskett, sounds just like Carl. Excellent guitar player, too. But there is only one Carl.

I almost saw Jeff Foskett a few years ago...He was scheduled to sing at a Christian Men's group in Hartford, CT but was sick..His voice is awesome, too..Saw him in Brians band on the Pet Sounds tour in 2001 at Hartford, CT BB have to be the most influential group of all time.

Wow! I'm a TDN fan too. Powerful and pure voices. Cory does most of Eli's Coming and it makes you shiver. Chuck could (still can) blow the roof off too!! And Danny's no slouch. Too bad all 3 don't get along;Cory and Danny do a great job to this day. I've been to 20 Beach Boys concerts over the past 40 years. I've read many of the books on them and consider them a hobby. I have been a 60's rocker all my life and have recently switched over to Country (the new 60's rock in my opinion).

doonejune- Brian had a bad LSD trip and many more drug experiences years ago. He is a living example of: your brain/your brain on drugs. Brilliant song writer and leader of the Beach Boys in the early years. Never got type-casted as he went from surfing, to cars, to love,country and just plain old feel good music. He put together more than 3 chords. That is why he and his music still endures. By the way, Darlin' sounds the same to me.

In concert now days, Three Dog will tell you of the fortune they literally blew. What a power group of the 70's & into the 80's. 3 of the most pure and powerful voices ever.
