I think the article in RS last month was so honest. One of the best tributes ever. DFW death by hanging, I believe, was not something selfish, it was desperation. Perhaps a mind cannot take an MAOI like Nardil for twenty years and then wean off it without disastrous results. At the time of his death he was married to a great gal, and had a job he loved, money, super-cool parents, dogs that he rescued.. He always had many friends. I am convinced that nardil kept him alive and killed him...RIP

Wow, the interview with Wallace in here is really good. I've never seen the charlie rose show that I can remember, but he interviewed incredibly. Also, Wallace says some great stuff in this too. I didn't watch the other interviews, but I don't doubt the interviewees are interesting people too.

David Foster Wallace was a kindred spirit; we should all be sad that he suffered so much, just as we should be and compassionate about anyone in any kind of pain; I am incredibly sad that he is no longer around to observe and explain this world to us. He was brilliant, self-deprecating, and generous with his talent, which we were so lucky he shared with us. I wish there was more to come... I wish there was a different way to end the pain.

Essentially, electroshock therapy for the new age. It only made his depression more unbearable, of course, and he committed suicide after trying the new therapy all summer. According to the statement "he just couldn't stand it anymore." So, whomever insults and condescends to David Foster Wallace because of his suicide after this, well...you're going to hell, or whatever place you believe in. I hope you enjoy it.

I hope you all know, before you rag on him or even clumsily defend him, that David Foster Wallace had very good reasons to kill himself, I'm sorry to say, and was not a coward or whatever. He had been on depression medication for 20 years and, in the weeks before he committed suicide, was told by a doctor that the medication was giving him possibly irreparable damage because of side effects. He then got completely off of them AFTER 20 YEARS!

Having had a friend kill himself at 30, I find myself conflicted. Yes, it infuriates me, but I loved the guy, so I'm not going to go around cursing his memory and discounting everything he ever did. I wish he hadn't done it, though I can sort of understand his motivations (a lifetime full of pain and unemployment ahead of him). I tend to agree that anyone who reacts as viscerally as Mr. O'Dowdy to an act by someone he did not know might benefit from talking to someone about his feelings.

But simply in terms of themes and thematic approach, STANLEY KUBRICK is the absolute best film-maker their ever was. Most artistic directors tend to make movies about a small group of charecters whom the audience is frightened by or can't relate to or understand, but Kubrick makes real MOVIES, I mean he makes movies about the entire common WORLD. Quentin's best has got to be "Pulp Fiction" or the less talked about "Jackie Brown". To me, that movie was the absolute turning point in Tarantino's filmography, after that he made a few action/ expirimental films with classic genres, but JACKIE BROWN was absolutely sensational, you talk about Q.T.'s ear for dialog, alright, this had REAL charecters and REAL dialog, it was emotionally involving, cinematically entertaining, and absolutely brilliant. Pam Grier should've got the Oscar.

@tobbaddol It makes it virtually unwatchable. I think I got through the first 12 minutes or so before just giving up.. what a shame. I think the guy is one of the most fascinating people out there. His show is hilarious. If anyone is interested, my favourite Charlie Rose of all time is with Matt Stone and Trey Parker, and it's less than 30 minutes since they were only on half the show. It's right after they released Team America; it's hilarious.

I think Conan has the smartest humor on television. He can be silly but you can't call him stupid at all, not only is he really funny but his intellect is off the charts. I like when he owned Jennifer Garner when she tried to call him out and say "snuck" isn't a word and she kept saying "sneaked", they brought a dictionary and Conan was right and did his evil laugh...brilliant

I came to West Wing late in the game. I didn't believe a television series could catch my imagination and put me in the White House with in-depth characters and plausible story lines. In an age where I've got 900 TV stations, DVR, DVD's, stacks of discarded video tapes--it's still a challenge to find superlative writing, acting and directing on the tube. I guess that's why I bought the entire West Wing DVD series.

I really do miss the nobility and idealism of the West Wing. It seems all the shows on television now are so cynical about the world. They're quality shows - Mad Men, Weeds, Entourage - but they're so soul crushingly cynical. I was one of the few who actually watched Studio 60 and enjoyed it. I want Aaron Sorkin back on television.

My thoughts on this one were, they were asking Sheen about him playing the role of President, he said he would never cast himself in that role that he would see himself as Spencers role. Sheen also said he saw John Spencer as the Prsident. The other reference about Ronald Reagan was him as an actor and he should be VP and James Cagney (a bigger movie star) should be President. This was an amazing interview about a fantastic show. I was most stunned by Spencers comments this was his swan song.

In Feb 2003 when i was in washington on hols i happened across a limo with a camera attached to the side. I followed it and low and behold met the cast of THE WEST WING. All of which must be said are absolute kings and queens of personality and civility. Martin Sheen spent time with people chatting signing autographs. Allison Denning both stunning in beauty and height was a delight and Richard Schiff was a gent as was Bradley Whitford but alas John Spencer was the only one missing. great day

It's very sad but apt that The West Wing was indeed John Spencer's swansong, and a fine one at that - but didn't John Spencer GET that opportunity. He was still there past when Sorkin had anything do with the show or his character anymore. Regardless, he will be missed. And whilst in recent history there has been quite a few great ensemble casts, I reckon (especially the cast of Season 2 & 3/Post-Mandy) The West Wing had the best of the lot.

Totally agreed. I can see the video starting to lag around 3 minutes in. Good Lord I can buy a DVD burner for $100 at Sam's club and use shareware to rip the DVD to my $600 laptop and it comes out perfect.
