That was absolute brilliants. It's incredible that the 60's basic star-ship design (saucer section, body, 2 nacelles) looks good even today - 40 + years later. Just never seems to get old. Gene Roddenberry was a very clever chap. And thank you Christopher Roberts for your video. Very well compiled and edited. You should feel very proud. Love to see a hi res version sometime?

You might get your wish. All the previous renditions of Trek have gone from series first then to movie. But with this new movie, we could see a series come out of it. I would sign any petition that wants to do that.

I enjoyed seeing this footage very much. There is a film noir feel to it, as if Kirk is a detective writing in his diary. Rod Serling made science-fiction feasible for television in the early 60's, so we have him to thank for even the possibility of Star Trek even happening. George Takai was featured in a Twilight Episode which I saw recently, he was very good in it. I was always disappointed that they didn't give Takei, Doohan, and Nichols more to do as characters, even in the movies.......

Remember that NBC, in giving Gene Roddenberry another chance to pitch "STAR TREK" before considering it for their Fall 1966 schedule, wanted a "different" pilot than the one previously submitted ["The Cage"]. Gene gave them what they wanted- different music (and theme), titles and "acts", and a slightly different crew...after the network accepted this version, Roddenberry "fine tuned" everything yet again before production began...it's as simple as that.

I totally agree. I sincerely believe the format was to the detriment to the otherwise excellent but short-lived "The Invaders" series, Quinn Martin's only foray into sci-fi. The format's OK for serials like "The Fugitive" and adds some serious class to fine crime dramas like "The FBI" and "The Untouchables," but it was really hokey on "12 o'Clock High" and spoiled the chilling continuity of "The Invaders." You can have commercial pauses, but "Act" titles wreck the fantasy factor of sci-fi.

The basic design of this pilot layout with the "Tonight's Episode" and "Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, Act 4" and "Epilog" were throwbacks Desilu's "The Untouchables." It was used in many live TV dramas to discern the ads from the programs and Desilu producer Quinn Martin adapted it for "The Untouchables." Of course, it was a format that became a hallmark of every Quinn Martin & QM series, whether anthology, cop or detective series, war drama or science fiction (remember "The Invaders"?)

Very good, i think they made the right choice not using the "Act 1" "Act 2" stuff. Anyway everything turned out good even though NBC probably made the wrong decision on the cancellation. Thankfully Roddenberry chose syndication for TNG. To bad Paramount didn't have the sense to do that on Enterprise or it might still be on. Let's hope the new film next year is good.

Yes, it's called incidental music. It's stuff they play in the background to drive the atmosphere. I noticed they were playing the same stuff in place of the theme music in the opening. Those were still to be created if the series was picked up. I can understand why these scenes were cut when they made the pilot for the first episode. They sucked and did nothing for the story. I'm glad they did away with all those overhead shots too.

It's funny. This special was the first time i had ever seen the first Mind Meld scene, although I knew the episode very well. In the New York area, on W-PIX syndication..the scene was cut out. Can you believe that? Shows how much syndication stations cared about continuity. Only when the videos first became commercially available in 1985, did the syndication packages change.

"Devil In The Dark" is the episode when Shatner's father passed during filming. Shatner actually was not present for the filming of this scene. His reactions and lines were filmed later. Actually, it was Kirk that was "killed" by the "Death Grip".

I remember for real. I also remember, when Kirk first came to the window, and called out his name..Spock gets up, and STRAIGHTENS HIS UNIFORM. Do you remember the audience chuckling at this? Non Star Trek fans couldn't understand the laughter on such a sad scene. But that was SO Spock. He's dying..and he straightens his uniform. It's little touches sometimes that make Star Trek characters so magical and special. When he walked into the glass, that's when the crying started for real. Powerful.

Excellent docu, although I notice it overlooks the animated series which featured all of the original core cast except Walter Koenig(although he did write one episode), and which broadcast in the mid-1970s. To see James Doohan so frail was also quite heart breaking actually. RIP....

Enterprise got canned just as it was starting to turn the corner, and that so called Last Ep "These are the Voyages" ughh, please. I agree the sage deserves a much better ending that what it got. If they ever make a direct to dvd- please no more "Faith of the Heart." Worst opening for a Trek series ever. The theme alone might have contributed to the series premature death!!

And the thing with the klingons ridges that was bull I personally met Mr Roddenberry's personal assistant from TNG and I asked him about that and he told me the only reason they didnt do it back in the 60s was cost he said Gene just said use your imagination he never wanted to explain it or thought it needed explaining for ENT to go and use a lame explanation was direspectful to Gene and fans.

Enterprise would have worked if they'd made it the prequel it was supposed to be instead of a retread of Voyager. They missed possibly the only chance to show us "the beginning of the Star Trek saga". They were getting on course with seasons 3 and 4 but by that time the only people still watching Enterprise were Rick Berman and his mum. Enterprise, Star Trek and fans all over the world deserved so much more.
