In this song, when she calls them 'California Girls', she isnt referring to the thousands of awesome girls there, she's talking about the Paris Hilton types. She even says in the beginning 'There's alot of good women from Sac. to Cor.' I really like her approach to jazz. The guitar, instead of the piano, is used in a very textural way. She's one of my favorite jazz vocalists next to Diana Krall and Shirley Horn. I've always loved this song. It's so gorgeous and the lead singer has an amazing voice. They deserved more commercial success than they had, but nevertheless to be able to have produced such a wonderful song at all is very impressive! I never get tired of hearing it, even years after it was released. It's a pity there isn't more such memorable and lasting music produced nowadays, and instead a lot of it is by crappy "artists" like P Diddy (or whatever his latest name is!), etc.

You're essentially correct, matty. But it wasn't Mike who shut down Smile, it was Brian. Brian was faced with so much opposition that he had to decide between breaking up the band and going solo or placating his mates. He decided to preserve The Beach Boys and, therefore, Smile had to be scrapped. Mistake at the time? Maybe. So many decisions; so little time. Thankfully, Brian finally completed the project anyway. The Odeon records version is NOT meant to be cohesive... it's just supposed to be a kind of "starter's version" of Smile, presenting most of the basics in one place. The REAL cohesive version was the free-for-download Smile from the bootleg company Purple Chick, which used Beach Boys recordings to replicate Brian's 2004 version as closely as possible. It's flawed, but it's pretty cool to hear nonetheless. :-)

I agree. It is a fantastic performance that has more heart and soul than the '71 version. The '71 version is great but it feels cluttered and I miss Brian's vocal at the beginning and I hate the Child Is Father of Man section thrown in on the end. Love Brian's ending on this version. This video was recorded in the mid 60's. Brian and Van Dyke wrote this song for SMiLE, but this was the only recording of this particular song from that time period. Years later when Carl was under pressure from the record label to use more songs penned by Brian, he dug up this recording and added in his own voice (in parts) and a backing band to make it whole. It was ultimately released on the aptly named "Surf's Up" album in the early 70's.

It is technically called a mordent. (google mordent). All he is doing is a one note up, back, one note under and back. Sometimes this is just called a turn. Why complicate and over analyze something so simply, intuitive and beautiful??? Ben isn't thinking about embellishing the vi chord or outlining the key - why should you? Transcribe it if you like, otherwise who gives a crap about putting a title on it...

It's a chromatic quick-lick which is based off of a target note you want to go play. Random example: Say you play a line that leads to a D, you would swiftly play D Eb D Db D. If you play that quickly (like Ben does at 38-42) you should get that sound. So essentially you're outlining your target note, or the last note of a line. Very common, handy tool. =)

He is playing around the VI chord of the tonic (I). If they play the tune in F, Ben is making an embellishment around D minor. From there he goes to the II minor chord, then to the V dominant and then back to the tonic, which indicates the key in which the whole song is played.

Arguably, the greatest ballad player in jazz history. "Prisoner Of Love" with Coleman Hawkins. Get It. For years I respect Seeger and Lomax but, unfortunatly this respect is ebbing as I see their peculiar 'self' interest in these interviews, especially the one with Donovan, Rev. To me, the amazing thing is that she plays the guitar upside down. Most left handed players still have it strung with the bass strings at the top. She has it strung as right handed, but plays it left handed, bass strings at the bottom, thus truly upside down! This means she has to make her chords in an inverted manner!

From a "technical" point of view, "Libba" Cotten is blilliant with a playing technique that is widely known under her very name, "The COTTEN-Style". At a very young age she learned herself to play Banjo & Guitar. When she was 11, she wrote the immortal "Freight Train" in 1903(!). It's haunting to see one of the greats playing who were the "inventers" of modern music!! Many thanks to Pete Seeger, whose family had special bonds with Libba Cotten, for this priceless footage, honor !!
