startrek is the best series ever... The original series was the most realistic, in my opinion. Not in terms of special effects, of course, but story lines etc. it is. Minus the ones where they have their own explanations of how things started, etc. Example who mourns for adonois, but given the previous choices that the greek gods were gods, it is quite realistic.

all in all however the Death star would be completely unnecessary, and the Empire could win a war with ease using nothing but a dozen ISDs (technically only one is needed if they wanted to out and out exterminate the federation, but for the sake of saving time and for actual conquest, the use of a few isds, along with some venators and acclamator dropships would be preferable to consolidate and hold ground while still advancing)

wouldn't have to, the death star's surface is bristling with hundreds of thousands of Heavy Turbolasers, each one can fire with the force equal to over 10 thousand photon torpedoes per shot and has extremely long range. Besides, the main weapon can fire off axis, and the enterprise's max acceleration is only 1000g it's maneuverability is comparable to that of a star wars ship of similar size (like say an Acclamator, which is still 100m longer)then there are the tractor beams

In DS9 starship phasers were seen shattering asteroids and giant chunks of ice not vaporizing them like an ISD did in ONE shot. I was thinking the same thing. Their transporters are really low budget. Also, Spock didn't beam down to the planet in The Man Trap initially. It was Kirk, McCoy and a crewman. Additionally, Kirk didn't have his phaser when he fought the Gorn. He built a bazooka out of materials he found around. And McCoy killed the salt creature in his quarters, not in some dungeon.

I think they learned a lession from the Star Wars Special Editions. They kept the alterations light and tasteful to remove the obviously poor special effects. McCoy was turned into an uncanny vally slug, and redshirts are not Jar Jar.

The sfx were supposedly redone according to Mr Roddenberry's (and/or production) notes. The original sfx scenes were limited by technology and cost. However, if you insist, you can always make your own styofoam rocks. (jk) Your comment reminded me of some auto restorers that would restore classic autos down to the last defect, even if the defect was accidental.

WHY!? Ok so the remastered version looks better than TOS but, fans of TOS like it for what it was at the time. These remastered shows and movies take away from the value of the original versions. The first Star Wars triology is an excellent example of this. The first three Star Wars were great, but now you can't even find the original versions...you can only get the ones covered in CGI vomit. I don't know about anyone else but I enjoyed the giant styrofoam rocks and obviously fake SFX.

This is so moving. I think it's amazing how the timeline is kept to, with parts of Generations being separated by some of the TV shows, and the First Contact scene occurring in it's initial spot, and then reappearing when they go back in time. Excellent use of the Guardian of Forever as the backdrop. And that song is just great!!!

18 months to rebuild the ship! I was looking around the net the other day and found out that her first refit(between Where to man has gone be for and Man Trap) had to be a year or less! I'm not sure what all was changed in the inside, but in one of the piolts its said the crew max is 200. Then later in the frist serse its 400! So they must have done alot of inside work. TMP is set only 3 years after the 5 year mission. In TOS there were only 12 ships like Enterprise and atleast 4 of those were destroyed before the series ended. Taking into account the time it would take to build a ship like Enterprise and the time it took for her redesign (18 months), it's conceivable that she is the only ship powerful enough to do the job. Enterprise was the first to be upgraded which made her the most powerful ship Starfleet had in service at that time. Just a thought.

One of the bad things about the director's cut is it... uh, didn't cut special effects parts, and they re-did the sound by throwing in TOS sound effects and mangling all the sound design they had in the original cut. The TOS sounds are just out of place in this movie.

This was my favorite ST movie. The others just didn't have the same feel to it, it was like they were rushed. This particular part in this clip almost has a 2001: A Space Odyssey feel to it. This film was more artistic than the others. And since I see people debating on ship designs, I always like the "Gunstar" from The Last Starfighter. Very overlooked IMO.

the eagle from space 1999 is also a very good design as far as using the technology we have now, it's a shame really, with the Ion engines getting better and better the hard part is getting the ships into space in the first place, rather than going from one area to the other.
