man, i haven't seen one gene kelly movie that i haven't loved yet. he was just such an incredible dancer. he looks so natural doing it. not to mention he's totally gorgeous, charismatic, and charming. i wish actors today were as versatile as they used to be. not to mention movies were just cleaner and GOOD back in the day.

Kitano had a perfectly good reason for this scene. Samurai films traditionally end with the hero wandering into the sunset and the grateful towns people bidding him a farewell, usually with traditional Japanese song and dance. But Kitano wanted his version of Zatoichi to be new, fresh and anything BUT traditional. That is why he chose to do a tap dance number. It works on so many levels because it's hugely unexpected, entertaining, memorable and original.
