I was watching the end of today's (1/21/07) Iron Chef and noticed the screen quickly blink red. A few seconds later I start thinking, "Was that the McDonalds logo...?" Thanks to the magic of my Dish Network DVR, I rewind, and put it in to slow motion.
Sure enough, Food Network is allowing McDonalds to run subliminal advertisements in the middle of their programming!

The last thing we should be doing is making excuses for this and saying that it was easy to spot. There is no definition for a one-framed advertisement besides being subliminal. On the food network, no less. My opinion is that the average viewer watching television isn't giving critical thought to everything she sees and these sorts of mental intrusions are doing an effective job of influencing our subconscious drives. Not to the effect some would believe, but to multiple exposure, absolutely.

It was one frame, at the END of the show after the viewer has been watching food being cooked for an hour. Nothing too exciting is happening, so the viewer is just as likely to miss it as to catch it- but not likely at all to realize what it was. It's like defining baldness.
