I think they both knew who was the better of the two, but Buddy was always deferential to Gene and acknowledged his influence. Supposedly Buddy had so much respect for Gene that he would hold back during these drum battles. Even Neil Peart acknowledges both their greatness. The last 2 Thanksgiving holidays my wife and my father in law have played this.... My wife on Guitar as tenor / alto and my father in law on Guitar as baritone / bass / harmony and it is played several times a day. I don't dig country typically but this song has some depth and realism and to hear them play it and hear this video. There is magic here, everywhere, and I love it.
