'Genetic Engineering'? We substitute chords, to make basic progressions 'more interesting'. But we have to stay within limits else the song becomes something different. Standards by various composers use similar progressions. We can 'quote' from a song, when improvising another. Porter apparently didn't like Jazz musicians 'altering' his songs. So, Porter or Gershwin? Porter the more classy, but Gershwin wrote fine stuff. Thanks. John

Hola. Pues para entender el Atemahawke hay que tener en cuenta que el disco cuenta las historias de 8 personajes. En esta cancion intervienen Gretel (una mujer malvada de pupilas color rosa) y Morgan (una mujer pulpo), de cuando la primera sube a un edificio frente al bar donde trabaja a buscar a alguien; y este es su encuentro con ese alguien. Yo creo mas bien que la cancion es como una relacion sexual (mas bien me lo comento alguien): lenta al principio pero con cierto ritmo al ultimo.

I remember first seeing this film during 1974 I believe - it depressed me and gave me nightmares - now many years on - it is a startling film full of atmosphere and strange - still leaves a residue of something that I carry around with me - even after this short clip. Can never make up my mind about the late Sir Dirk Bogarde - something totally ambivalent about him even in his books! But he often leaves me with a feeling of sadness!

Interesting. I'm a film studies major, not a historian, but I do think that Night Porter reflects a contemporary perspective on Nazism. See Sontag's article, "Fascinating Fascism." It moves into a discussion of how the SS uniform is fetishized in contemporary BDSM play. In Night Porter, the SS uniform is fetishized -- even the fact that Max is an SS officer points to this fact; why not a fellow prisoner? The cabaret scene is a very good example of this phenomenon.
