Impressive! Fabini not only has incredible technique but he ALSO combines this with musicality and restrained elegance - which is where most other young pianists fall short. He reminds me of Pascal Roge, who recorded all five concertos on CD (London?) for those who are interested in Saint Saens. I wish they'd play Saint-Saens concertos more often in the concert halls.

im not getting at anyone in any bad way..but if its so easy..how come they are able to make something so simple sound so difficult..may be by knowing what the chord progression is, people may think its so easy..but there is so much more going on inside of these turnarounds besides the major/minor scales. like the diminished..(so important) the music is beautiful... i believe that the black man is a true king. so many world contributions with little respect and recognition.someone cursed us!!

Wow! Who would've guessed that THE LION would be here, man?! This is incredible! Duke Ellington's phrasing and chords, Billy Taylor's IMPECKIBLE technique and timing, and Willie's classic cigar and his unique ideas with rhythm. This is truly great. 7/5 stars.

Herbie and Oscar are 2 of the highest level jazz pianists that have lived in our time. Most any jazz pianist famous and not will make reference to Herbie and Oscar as influences in their own development. It's difficult to compare them technically because both have the chops and real facility on the instrument. Oscar and Herbie both experimented with synths and other keyboard instruments and each one also composed original recorded music. But I would honestly have to say that Oscar is Supreme.

I just love Oscar so much, I think Herbie has done some beautiful music, it doesn't matter at all who I like the most, I'm very happy for Herbie and Oscar that they were able to meet and probably be friends. a mi tambien me hizo llorar esta maginifica interpretacion, muy emotiva ( y eso que fue improvisado, como sera si lo ensayaran!!). Lo mas hermoso y lo que mas me gustó, fue el abrazo al final, una especie de reconcilicion. Es doloroso como la "ideologia" separa a los seres humanos. Aqui en Venezuela estamos dividos "gracias" a los criminales que nos gobiernan, las familias y los amigos divididos y alejados y el pais cyendose a pedazos...

Again, they aren't born with it. I know of countless people (including myself) who were not athletic in their younger days, but say they got inspired, and now they are. Drawing, music, math, etc, you aren't "born with a predisposition". Though you are correct about needing perfect pitch and good memory, and flexible hands, but not large hands (Hoffman). But it's all learnable. Although I have no piano examples, I know of 3 guitarists who started MUSIC at the age of 11+ and are virtuosos.

I think what he means is, to succeed as a CONCERT pianist you need to be born with it. There is a huge difference between playing a few pieces passably and playing a massive repertoire at a level people will pay money to hear you for many years.

Ben is a very good example of what most of these chinese bloodsport nerds will never have: naturally born artistry. Despite expending 2/3 of his time to studying music, he has an inner comprehension of it, despite have a somehow "restricted" REAL LIFE experience, he has a deep soul. I found this to be very "square", it was very obediant to the tempo markings, which is exactly how Rachmaninov would have not wanted it. For example, Rachmaninov had specific instructions to play the end of the Agitato section as quickly as possible, which I didn't find evidant in this performance. Also, if you studied Rachmaninov, you should have known that he was well-known for his habit of constantly adding in dimuendos and accelerendos which is why I say this performance was too "square".

Why do you cut the piece a few bars before it ends? Why not play a gradual diminuendo along with rallentando till the final chord? By cutting it up, you completely lose the tension, at least in my opinion.

and i think so(look in the comment before,sorry), because i think brahms would have wanted it to be played not so fast.he played it the first time at Franz Liszt's house in Weimar and Franz Liszt said it was too slow.and our example here is played very fast. so i think if brahms played it there too slow for liszt(and he didnt like him tooo much), then i think he(brahms himself) played it slower, just as claudio arrau

Katchen's recording on London is a little less rushed while still being tremendously exuberant. That's the recording that got me both into Katchen and Brahms 2nd sonata. I never saw him though --- thanks SO much for posting!!

It is unfortunate that many (not all) Asian players have been influenced by German professors who are demanding that they pay strict attention to the score. Please, do not blame the performers for the mold they have been cast in. After the twig is bent is it difficult to straighten the tree. Even their Korean and Chinese teachers follow the rigid training and will not allow players to interpret the music. Sad because many potentially good players are ruinedm stiffled.

According to research and historians, Beethoven himself wasn't known for his pianistic technique, rather for his skill on improvising. I was really surprised to hear the teacher's comment about virtuosity between 6:28 to 6:36. I believe this is a true fact because these days, you never come across a modern-day pianist such as Liszt or Chopin because no one is coming up with any new compositions. Eventually, the critics are going to want something more or new. This is why I feel more comfortable composing than playing someone else's piece so that I can inspire a new generation of true pianists.

When I watched this film, the musicians raising the bows of their violins were for me a symbol of the whole Poland raising its weapons against fascism. Not only military weapons, but also those of culture. On the other hand, all the beauty and brilliance of that music (which had been banned by the nazis) after the nightmare of war makes a striking contrast. That would be Alfred,. Viewed all 8 of these clips again tonight, couldn't stop, they were fascinating, first time was about 6 mo's ago. Got alot out of it the second time around, I like the way he really got into the slow movement intro of the Beethoven during rehearsal, like lang lang. His thoughts of the 4 characterizations to think about a piece was good stuff and also , musicianship without intellect is amateurish, how true.

I know. I was just surprised. I want to try out Bosendorfer and Bluthner. Steinways are very nice, but they're the only high quality piano I've tryed my hands at. The middle tone on Steinways is lush. The upper tone makes an echo throughout the piano. However, what I've heard in Bluthners, their upper notes sing, and their middle notes are smooth, and makes no extra sound. Even though it was only a recording, I could hear the quality of preserving the sound of the notes.
