just because Perlman has polio and cant walk without crutches doesnt mean we should feel sorry for him! i would totally love to be able to play like him (and i know it doesnt work this way, but im trying to make a point...) and polio seems like a reasonably small price to pay in the long run. Thank you for posting this! It's amazing to be able to click onto the computer and see footage like this. His technique improved later, but even here he's still got that amazing mastery that lets the music sing for itself, without a huge ego interposing. I worship him even more now!

no way - ur obviously not playing the viola correctly then. it's much harder to get a good sound out of the viola. it is bigger, has thicker strings - you have to apply much more pressure with the bow and fingers for tone and articulation. a violist can pick up a violin and can get a better sound than a violinist can simply because they play viola. and if u don't trust me on that, at least agree that any tricky finger work is harder on the viola because it is bigger!

Zigeunerweisen significa "gipsy ways" o "modos de ser de los gitanos".Sobre la fuente d'inspiracion...no conozco bien la cida de Sarasate (soy pianista, jeje),pero vengo de Rumania y conzco mucho la musica gitana y hay un monton de motivos especificos. Come on. In my opinion Zukerman improved over time while Perlman's performance suffered a little bit. What EXACTLY is the outrageous & inacceptable part of such an assertion? Perlman's still one of the greatest violinists on the surface of this planet - but doesn't keep me from stating my opinion. Why would it? Are virtuosos saints? They are not, guys. They make mistakes. They get better. They get worse. Get over it. NO ONE's implying that he's a less-than-stellarmusician.

Hi TheLampie, Thank you for your comment, that I compared them. Indeed, in the solo part (5:18-34), Heifetz's interpretation is so deep, beyond comparison. But, it seems that Perlman put more emphasis on the part before the solo (4:49-5:18), which is breath taking, too.

i can't help but laugh whenever i listen to this piece and think of what debussy said - "I have a horror of oversentimentality - and its name is Saint-Saens". haha!! i do like this piece though, even though i like debussy as well. i wonder what debussy would have said of perlman's rendition...(!!!)

Screw whoever was giving thumbs down to the comment about the trumpeter doing this. It's a phenomenal accomplishment to be able to play this piece on a brass instrument! And why not?! Brass music isn't as good as strings music!

They were complete equals in every way. I think Heifetz was a bit better with left hand pizzicato, and Perlman being just the slighthest hair better with fast stuff being bowed, though both are valuable techniques and skills.

No offense to dear Mr. Perlman, but personally, I prefer Heifetz's interpretation... He has the soul ánd a technique that has never been equaled - not that Perlman lacks precision but I've never heard anyone play so accurate ánd musically at the same time as Heifetz used to...

I thought it was the other way around? The Guarnerius violins are the ones which make the explosive sounds (i.e. Cannone Guarnerius was well known for it's incredible power, and it was Nicolo Paganini's personal violin) where Stradivarius violins make the brighter, warmer tones (such as the Gibson ex-Huberman, which Joshua Bell currently plays). I suppose it's possible that the two separate makers made violins which produced either quality.

I'm taking a guess that it is the Sauret Guanerius because it has a warmer, muted sound and guanerius's are famed for their collected warm sound and Strads are famed for the explosive power they provide. See the Cannonball Strad.

I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but this video doesn't show Perlman at his most passionate. True, any violinist should be proud of this performance, but it isn't satisfying to me because it just seems like a perfunctory performance of his--like he's played this a thousand times (which is probably close to the truth) and he has everything down but he wasn't into it 100%. More like 70%

Wrong. To perfect usage of the right arm and the bow is something that takes a lifetime to achieve, much like perfecting proper usage of a guitarist's right hand. There's really no comparison as both are extremely difficult to master and can take a player his/her entire life to do so.

I have a copy of the DVD recording of this concert, and believe me, Perlman convincingly demonstrates why he is considered to be one of the best violinists of the past century. (He also plays the Beethoven Concerto on that DVD with the same conductor... wow)
