This experiment was on a BBC Four documentery called Time but they only used the numbers on a flashing display which was set so that it flashed too fast for the person to read but as they fell time for them slowed down and they could read the numbers. Only problem was that they only got close confusing similar numbers and whatching it you could guess the number as it didnt really flash fast enough. There was also a article on this sort of thing in the New Scientist

With that, these books aren't philosophy, they can inform philosophy, but they do not provide you with philosophy. Both authors explicitly state their goal is entirely scientific experimentation. They won't even define "consciousness". They simply recount the experimental evidence pertaining to consciousness and specifically visual consciousness. They have the odd philosophical musing, but nothing claimed as absolute truth, just hypotheses.

He should be saying "Our perception of everything is within us, we have no 'experience' of the world directly." Pick up these books: The Astonishing Hypothesis: The Scientific Search for the Soul by Francis Crick The Quest for Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach by Christoph Koch You can't go wrong with these books in regards to science. They are not philosophy.

I was like you once, but i realized all the books on theoretical physics I read and all the bill hicks videos in the world could never explain my existence or reality. I can understand your disdain for my comment. It seems even to me ripe with egoisms. I never considered myself in that 1% i'm merely stating that my opinion is that psychoactive substances shouldn't be taken lightly, and not everyone get's the same benefits from them as Huxley did. As a learned and open minded individual he came to these perceptions within the context of his psyche, you can not atrribute his stance purely on the drug. the problem with lsd and self exploration is you encounter ALL of the uncontrollable emotional problems (such as depression) head on, it's very interesting how the sub conscious handles it (while under the influence) and how the conscious handles it (the day after taking lsd) but this is just from personal experience which happened 2 days ago [i love santa cruz]
