Well, actually the real Beats didn't even like folk music, and they weren't into long hair either. Peter, Paul and Mary sort of blurred the lines by affecting a Beat appearance, but the true Beats were usually clean-cut (with goatees at times) and tended toward bebop or "cool" jazz a la Miles Davis. And the old Beats were not fans of the emerging hippie movement.

Great. I like the english folk very much. I love the BJansch voice and his playing, and the J renbourn solo is perfect! The only semifault to me is the drums are too loud, but they sound well, maybe another type of drumsticks (escobillas) though I can't understand the utility of common drum beat for this music... THANKS

Well technically you replied to my comment first. As a matter of FACT Bert Jansch was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He is Scottish. And if you study carefully, gypsy music originates in India with sitar. So it's Scottish gypsy MUSIC! This PARTICULAR version of a song that was once an olde English and now American traditional contains (from my perspective) musical influence from Bert's native Scotland and the Indian sitar gypsy homeland. The song is "Let no man steal your thyme". That's still true today. Give it away if you want to. If you were pregnant and unwed a hundred and more years ago, you'd know what this song meant. Rue symbolised regret, but it was also well-known as an abortifacient. If you read Ofelia's "silly ditties" in Hamlet, you'll see he seduced her and probably made her pregnant - so she wore her rue with a difference. Yeah, Danny is really up there. He's extremely creative, and very skilled. I can only hope to play that way one day. Bert and John arranged a lot of the music, but left many open parts for Danny to improv through. If you listen and watch closely, you can really dissect it. It's very interesting.

Danny is in a league of his own! Saw them live many times and he did a singing piece called "The Loneliest Monk" about a monk who could not sing--he said to the critics not to write about his inability to sing; that was the point of the song and the very demonstration. He more than made up for not singing. Terry Cox was the second most arrogant drummer in the world...he could never remember the first. They can each and all be arrogant as they wanna be! .NuclearG1 on the button - when the band first appeared the music press said they were pioneering "jazz-trad" and the thing which really caught their attention was Danny Thompson's manic playing of an instrument never before associated with the English folk movement. The bass brought an exciting new dimension to the genre. The band never charted,even in England, because folk wasn't mainstream. But Pentangle were huge on the college circuit and had real cred among thinking people.

They certainly do, but it's not "Celtic". Celtic music as a "traditional" genre is actually a recent construct, basically feel good mood music for Irish-Americans. In Europe it may denote Breton or Galician music in addition to Irish, Scottish and Welsh.

great to see bert looking relatively healthy and happy. Was he the Scottish Dylan? Who cares...what a talent. It may be"just a standard blues progression" but in the hands of the pentagle it's transformed into something magical. You can hear Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis, Davy Graham, sonny terry and a whole lot more. Totally love the pentagle. They've made my life a brighter and better place since I discovered them in the 80's from a friend's mum.

you know I've only heard Renaisance once at a stoned party years ago, and the thing that stuck in my mind was that the guy singing was Keith Relf from the Yardbirds, off whom I am a huge fan. So maybe it's time for me to check out some Renaisance. So you could be right. I forgot to mention June Tabor and Norma Watterson..but when it comes to female singers, none compare to the mighty Nina Simone..different style but what a natural. Very nice to see this. I never saw the original version live, although I have seen later versions with Jacqui, Bert, and John, and once with Terry Cox as well. And Danny Thompson has been playing with Richard Thompson for many years so I've seen all the original members one way and another.

In my misbegotten youth, (and still now at 60), I adored Jacqui. I first met her music in 1970 (yup, 38 years ago) and have been a fan since. Willy is traditional English. I've listened to most things Pentangle since I discovered "Basket of Light" decades ago. I DO like this version of Willy O', but I prefer Renbourn's take. Somehow, his voice seems more appropriate, or maybe it's the guitar that's lacking here. Love Terry Cox on the (double?) bass here.

This is a haunting, sort of an ethereal recording. I agree, second only to the Carter family, but it is hard to compare the two...so different...apples and oranges sort of a thing. I am glad it is here as the delicate voice makes it such a strong piece.

i got to disagree with whotookaegir here and say I think this version spooks th ehell out of the carter families version (even though I love their version)...there's something witchy about this version that gives me chills. Where and when did this (and the other clips) air originally? Was this a TV special highlighting songs from Solomon's Seal, or part of a larger performance? It's great to see these songs performed live- over here in the US the Pentangle was very obscure, and I hadn't seen them "live" until just now with these clips, so thanks!

Jacqui wrote it? Nice job! This is one of the best original Pentangle songs, especially lyric-wise. Although Jacqui is cute here, and Terry looks surprisingly straight-laced, I must say, both Bert and Danny "Buffalo Bill" Thompson look like they seriously need a glass of water, some drops of visine, and a haircut (not necessarily in that order). I imagine the invisible John looked even worse. Great performances here, though- maybe better than the versions on Solomon's Seal.
