Wendy Carlos (of Switched on Bach fame) actually composed a complete score for The Shining, but Kubrick ultimately used very little of it. In addition to Penderecki's music, Kubrick also used some Ligeti, and Bartok's "Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste".

It wasn't composed for...Kubrick just used his music, same with the Exorcist...very effective...but I think the darkness also has a kind beauty to it, so I think its very diverse, but emotionally complex.

If you want dark and creepy, try the Viola Concerto by Sofia Gubaidulina performed by Yuri Bashmet. It's here on youtube. Has to be some of the most depressing music i have heard in a while. Also listen to Son Et Lumiere by Steven Stucky. Depressing as hell.. and creepy.

you will never find the whole score of this because the people who listen to it feel uncomfortable after about a minute and stop listening, they don't feel that other people should hear the whole score because its such a powerful piece of music

This would make brilliant film music. For music where Donald Sutherland could be in the film. Like a film I forgot the name to where the dwarf woman stabs him in the end. It definitely has a similar sound the X files theme when they pluck the strings at 2:00 minutes and at 5:00 minutes in the piece, I even find it is the chromatic upward sound which produces such a chill. Also at the moment of 6:50 it sounds very hitchcockish and Jaws. This is due to staccato movements with cello and violin,bril

To listen to any of Penderecki's compostitions and not to think of the shining is almost impossible I mean the soundtrack to that movie stands out more than anything besides Nicholson's epic performance and the amazing directorial effort that Kubrick put forth in this classic film Penderecki is my all time favorite composers his compositions are just so damn haunting it can fit into a lot horror movies of the past and some present day horror flicks.

An excellent performance! I'm a violist & I know this piece, & her playing is top-rate. Her sound is beautiful & expressive, the articulation is precise, & the intonation is accurate-- admirable given this is a live performance of very difficult material. Her posture is weird, but who cares? Because of the inherent awkwardness of playing viola, many great players have unorthodox solutions to the technical challenges. What matters is the result-- & this is a truly great performance!

To understand this piece (put in simplest terms) - While others (composers) had written music asking the question "Why did we kill the Jews in the Holocaust?" or "Why do we let genocide and war happen?", Penderecki wrote Utrenja to ask the question "Why did we kill God?" Pretty powerful stuff...

A votre service :-) JUTRZNIA is an old russian word. In English literary translation is: matins - it is a religious meanning. You can be closer to "dawn" as far as the time of a day comes. Get some more CDs by Penderecki. Tough guy, excellent music, wonderfull orchestration :-)

The "Latin" intended for this piece is not the Latin American, but the "Old latin, European, and not focusing on the German, which is not known of,Latin in Europe, is the base of the Romance Languages,no need to get in to the Study of Languages,if the Conductor will focus on the origin of thecomposition(Latin, the Only Latin, Old that is)I am sure that the experience and expression will reach the sublimity of the composition.

Gracias! fué un trabajo arduo con muy buenos resultados. Los tenores fueron en esta interpretación, para ese momento, estudiantes del primer año de dirección coral que nunca en su vida habían cantado en un coro. Para ellos la empresa fué titánica. Gracias por comentar!

Muy buena interpretacion... especial mencion a los jovenes solistas, que hicieron un excelente trabajo..... una lastima que los tenores no brillaron un poco mas... aun asi sigue pareciendome bastante buena la interpretacion, puesto que no es una obra para nada facil... FELICITACIONES!!!!

As I understand, Latin can be pronounced in two differetn ways, italian pronnunciation and german pronnunciation. For this version I chose the italian pronnunciation, that is easier for a venezuelan choir. I believe that as the difference in mimimun I could take that risk, and at the end, I still think we did a very good job, it sounded very well (although the acoustics in the video ar very lousy). Solo son tres minutos pero si quieren ver mas asistan a una de sus presentaciones. Valen la pena. (cual pena!?)

...ever heard Paul Neubauer?.....he and Tabea are the two "big" non-violinist violists...Bashmet played violin before viola....switched to viola only to spend more time on his rock guitar practice...then discovered a voice in viola. Anyway, I have yet to find a violist as versatile as Neubauer.

its great, but I still get the feeling that something is missing in her playing, possible just her gestures that don't match the caracter of the music... She is still No.1 non-violinist violist in the world for me, much better than Bashmet.

This isn't bad. It's a shame that Penderecki conducted it, as he sucks at conducting his own stuff. (Even though he IS the composer and should know exactly what he's doing. Then again, Stravinsky had the same problem, so you know where that leads.) The violist is great, though.
