Lil's version is closer to the Jessica Rabbit version if anyone is interested :P I think the 1942 version is Lee's with Lil's a year earlier. I don't think McCoy was on the Lil's version although I could be very wrong, Bill Broonzy is who she worked with at that time? What strikes me is so many of these artists die at an early age.

that is exactly how the story goes..but lil green was a black if that says something for that time also..!!i think she recorded it at 1942 with joe mcCoy and his band. p.s.i definatelly prefer the version of lil green!!!she puts her soul to the song and it would be a lie not to mention her warm and sweet voice!!!

I think you are the 1 who isn't getting it. It's perfectly fine if Valentiae wants to hear the song as whining from an impossible woman, always making everybody's life impossible. MY POINT is that neither original songwriters (L & S) nor hit singer (PL) thought about it that way. Nor Thomas Mann, nor Tony Bennett (since they give us a male character). So, nothing wrong with Valentiae's own take, but the record of what the original songmakers attempted shouldn't be ignored, either.
