I saw Southside Johnny at the Capitol Theater in passaic in the late 70s with my future wife and some friends. It was a new years eve show and after the show as the crowd was leaving those of us who were still there were happily surprised when Bruce came out onto the stage and got Southside out again to jam. I remember he was almost falling off the stage. I was in the same shape. Southside was holding him up. A good time was had. Does anyone else remember this show.

wow, this is what I love about Youtube...we are lucky to have this. Just thought of this song, hadn't heard it in ages, and then like that find this video. I am not even like a huge Bruce fan, but I have to say he is one of America's top poets and songwriters. I have heard a little bit of "Accelerate" and I agree with you totally...its good not great...also I tried to get tickets to see them at the Greek Theatre here in Berkeley, California and the tickets were sold out in minutes...now going for huge prices on Ebay. I remember when going to a gig was affordable - you didn't have to sell a body part to afford the ticket price..a shame. Also what do you think about all this stuff about Michael's sexuality? What has that got to do with the music?

accelerate is fine...but it doesn't touch this stuff...it sounds like 'new adventures' era...with the exception of a couple of songs. The thing is, they didn't use a second guitar back then...and even though they were stripped down, they were more textured and artier...not just loud and fast, but simple and complex

I agree with you that the last couple of R.E.M. albums are not their very best, although I still really enjoy a couple of songs on every new album. Hopefully the upcoming album will contain more guitarwork from Peter Buck. I think he's one of the most underrated guitarplayers in rockmusic, and he's absolutely fantastic. Very diverse.

In a way I agree, UP was my first album, and from then I just went backwards in R.E.M.'s history, and I liked what I heard with every "new" old cd I bought... To me the newer stuff has lost alot of it's energy, but that's what seems to happen to every band in time... like metallica or the red hot chili peppers ...

I totally agree with you, pianoman. Peter Buck is one of my favorite guitarplayers since 1989, the year I discovered R.E.M. and from then on I became a lifelong fan. Quite recently Mike Mills have said (in a BBC documentary about alternative bands) that Peter has the BEST right hand in rockmusic. Peter's guitarwork has always fascinated me, he can play so much different styles and things in a great way. It's terrific. To me he's one of the greatest.

Yes, it's one of the songs they wrote in '82/'83 when they threw some old mattresses in the back of an old abandoned church and camped out writing music for several weeks on end. There's a lot of material in "Reckoning", "Fables..." and "Life's Rich Pageant" that was written during those few remarkable weeks.

I so totally agree about Mike's bass; I saw this tour in in San Francisco and this is no easy song to do live. Reckoning wasn't even out yet and everyone's jaw was dropping. It's a symphony and Mike Mills is MVP of this band.

I can't get over the sound of the bass line for this song, especally on the album version. Mike's Rickenbacker just has such an awesome treble punch under it. Just one of the reasons why I bought a Rickenbacker 4003 xD. (although Mills has a 4001) And I guess I'll re-post this, but does anyone else notice Stipe yelling "What's wrong with you!" right at the very end of the song? Right at 2:59 when Peter is using a towel on his hair. Just looks like Stipe has a mad look on his face. xD

All wrong on Induction, my friend. Hard to explain it's bullshit without recalling memories of their new powerful tour-been to show in Prague. Well, R'n'R Hall of Fame 'Gardening' was more accurate and more serious, surely according to THE rank of the show. Yet, much slower, no questions as they play with Bill who departed 10 years before. whew.

anybody who saw soem live shows in teh early and mid 80's could attest to how powerful, moody and exhillarating they were. You'd leave the show buzzing (and not because of hebs). Every show was different and had a different vibe.

My favorite live REM performance. No doubt about it. It's sad to listen to their 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance of this song and compare it to this one. It's just so clear that this band no longer has anything to say and is going through the motions. I wish I felt differently.

Thank you so much for putting up this show- REM at their youthful best - but compare with Gardening at Night from the 2007 Hall of Fame performance, and Michael's smile about 2 minutes in when he sees someone in the audience - same song but a generation apart - both wonderful in their own way.
