What a legend i would never of known that you could combine different modes and scales and it would still sound good, just by finding notes that go good with one another. Rock on Joe

To fast track your speed and have to ability to pick other things up quickly I would actually recommend learning sweep picking...but also use the chord practice John shows you but I would go from the first one he shows to the last then the two in the middle. Then try having your middle and ring finger on top and bottom similar to that. Sweeping is around 1 hour 21 minutes btw of John's video.

I'ld recommend just sitting with the guitar and just playing around...don't base what you want to do off of anything...figure it out by your ear. Now I will recommend that you look up John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video. This will show you very many practices that isolate the technique...it's no going to show you how to play per-say but it's a good resource for learning how to practice efficiently.

Hey, i'm no expert or anything, but i wanted to know the same thing as you, and i read that the best way to train your ear is to just sit with the guitar and just expose yourself to as much music as possible and try to play it on your guitar. for instance, sit infront of the tv and try to play bits of music when you hear them on adverts, or shows.

Good question. Most listeners fore example to blues music dosnt no wheather the artist is playing major or minor, but the listener will for most parts stil feel tension and sadness in the music. You can always manipulate the tone to make it sound happy, angry, sad. But i think that the feeling of sas or happy music is very much happy. Most of the time you can hear if somone is angy or happy even though you dont know what language the speak.

Easier this way Using the key of C no sharps or flats Learn the Mode "Patterns" C Ionian d dirian e phrgian ect You can play all these patterns. What makes it modal is the chord underneath. So using Ionian Pattern, if you play C underneath it will sound Ionian. If you use Ionian pattern but em chord underneath it will sound Phrigian

Excellent point. Let's just say I explore this question on a daily basis and am constantly attempting to deconstruct my mind's ear so as to reopen it to music devoid of social/psychological filters. I'm to the point now where smashing piano keys with a skillet sounds lighthearted and the theme to Sesame Street sounds like cosmic nails down a galactic chalkboard. Kidding aside, excellent point.

Guns n roses in the shirt??
By: Quantium. on 16 Nov 08, 10:25:04
It's easy, just basically learn the 7 major keys, and you'll automatically learn EVERY other mode. You wanna play D dorian? Just play the C major scale and start on D, easy.
By: rapiddescent2006. on 16 Nov 08, 03:51:22
i want to raise the point - if we werent exposed to ionian as 'happy' and aeolian as 'sad' would we associate those emotions with those modes?
By: sam14641. on 15 Nov 08, 14:25:56
does anyone know how he gets that metallic, twangy, gravelly guitar sound?
By: 73h1337kiwi. on 14 Nov 08, 22:47:24
its not quite as confusing as satch is making it sound. the the lydian scale is quite similar to the major scale. so when you're soloing it might not be a bad idea to switch between the two just to spice things up. it you can find one thats similar to lydian, you can then go to that one and so on until you're into something that really sticks out, like phryigan.
By: Viroun75. on 14 Nov 08, 10:03:29
Well, in order to use modes effectively you have to understand their relations with CHORDS. That's the one valuable way to use them. Quickly, you might know the harmonisation of the major scale. For example in C major, the chords are : I CMaj7, II Dmin7, III Emin7, IV FMaj7, V G7, VI Amin7, VII Bmin7b5. These are called diatonic chords. Now sort them by genre : Degrees I, IV are MAJ7 chords Degrees II, III, VI are min7 chords Degree V is a 7 chord Degree VII is a min7b5 chord
By: mmatt42. on 14 Nov 08, 00:02:43
haha!! wow that's a great way to remember it
By: P3313. on 12 Nov 08, 19:15:20
That is a tough question to answer. Practice is the obvious answer. You can't just play any of these scales whenever you want and expect it to sound good. They are not all in the same key so to use them effectively you must understand when they will work. Practice using a pedal note like he explains and then practice being able to lead these scales into one another, making it sound natural. Understand which notes are different between the scales and associate this with a feeling or mood.
By: drydent2. on 11 Nov 08, 21:15:11
can someone explain or send me something because i dont fully understand how you join different scales into one when soloing
