Well, Johnson and Lang were pretty much contemporaneous, and even recorded together. I think Johnson was in fact the first to use single-string licks in blues/jazz guitar; he did so while Lang was exclusively a rhythm player. I could be wrong, of course, but it's a minor quibble; Johnson and Lang were the two greatest jazz guitarists of their time, and advanced the art considerably.

Lonnie Donegan's skiffle was the first music I "dug", as such. A friend of mine's older, cooler, brother had 78s of his, as well as Little Richard and others, so we got to hear them. "6.05 Special" was the highlight of the week's TV in 50s Britain (our first pop TV?) and everything stopped. 3 cheers for Pete Murray and Ottilie Paterson as well. I have an album of Lonnie Johnson on the King label. It was put out in the late 60's or early 70's as part of a group of albums of some of the older performers. On the liner notes it mentioned that Lonnie had recorded about 700 recording of rolls. For the younger folks out there records first came in a cylinder roll. Lonnie has been around a long time. He died in 1970. but music still is great.
