You're right: it is a phenomenon.....a pop culture phenonmenon. There are also players that don't agree that Jordan is the best. Magic and Bird have both admitted that each other is the best so I suppose they can't make up their minds. At the end of the day, stating that Jordan is the "greatest player" is still an opinion, even if it is from NBA players and coaches.

The Jordan hype is so out of control, Worthy lead the Tar Heels to the championship in 82, but the Jordan/Media machine try to make it look like MJ single handedly beat georgetown because of one shot. But have you ever wondered what happened when worthy left, 83 & 84 Jordan can't even lead his team to a final four with great players like Same Perkins, Kenny Smith, Matt Daugherty and Matt Doherty on his team. Pippen led the Bulls to winning records without Jordan. He led them to a 55-27 record without Jordan. I challenge anyone to tell me if Jordan led his teams to better than 55 wins (and deep into the playoffs) without Pippen. This is an ugly truth Jordan fans don't want to acknowledge. If Pippen's 55 wins without Jordan (and game 7 of the eastern conference semi-finals) isn't a "real chance to win," then what do you call Jordan's three losing seasons (and first round exits) without Pippen?

Jordan is the best athlete in terms of what? In the technical sense, he is not the best. I think Wilt, Jim Brown, Bo Jackson, Babe Didrickson-Zaharas, etc. can all make a case for being better athletes than MJ. MJ may have been more popular, but that doesn't necessarily make him "better." Just because ESPN says he's the best doesn't make it indisputable.

I agree with everything you said except for the fact that Pippen > Jordan. Jordan fans don't want to acknowledge that without Pippen, he could never lead his team to anything respectable. Three losing seasons, and three first round exits (including two sweeps) are nothing to brag about.
