It's a terrible tragedy no doubt but it's a tragedy they could have avoided. All the other options were far worse. Invading would have resulted in millions of deaths on both sides; they would have defended Japan to the last man. A blockade would have taken too long and would have been a cruel thing to have to starve them. The irony is that the nuke was the most merciful choice because it'd have scared them into surrender. But still, it's definitely not a proud moment in history.

While I agree with you, we asked them to surrender four times and they refused... I still feel a great amount of remorse for those who did not belong in the war and got the boom-lowered on them, literally. I feel for the children, the mothers, the fathers, grandparents, I feel for people and their pain. That is why war, albeit nescessary (forced) is stupid, petty and has zero morality. Just to add to that, they bombed Tokyo with normal bombs killing 100,000 people. This single bomb killed 100,000 people. Its the same amount?! The Japanese just refused to surrender, and after evidence from a blood bath of American soliders (the last island before they would invade the Japanese mainland) they were forced to use this bomb. The Nagaski one is debatable, as the Japanese were considering terms of surrender, but the first without a doubt just had to be used.

(I'm not American by the way) but America wouldn't have dropped that bomb and caused the death of millions unless they had to. The Japanese, as markpolo has said, had kamakazi pilots and they as a country were prepared to fight to the death, based on their culture and religion. The U.S. had given them the option to surrender, but they weren't allowed to surrender. They did it to save the lives of thousands of American soliders.

I've lived in Hiroshima, I am married to a native Japanese. My father-in-law was training to be a Kamakazi pilot at the end of the war. If we had not dropped the bomb we would have invaded Kyushu then Honshu.....Estimated that 100,000 Americans and 1 million Japanese would have died during the fighting during those landings. It was a sad but true fact...the bomb ended the war.

Yes the area had military bases and the bombs did succeed in wiping out many soldiers, but it also killed a large proportion of civilians in densely populated areas. If we wanted to hit military targets there were lots of other options with less human cost. I'm not Japanese and I have no love for the Japanese Imperial High Command during WWII. Its not a question of blame, I don't dispute that fact that they committed war crimes. My Issue is with targeting civilians with Atomic Bombs. When we dropped the Bombs we also dropped our humanity with it. We denied innocent people the right to live, not only the people who died in the initial blast but the children who died of radiation poisoning after as well. The best Alcatrazz song ever. First you got Yngwie's perfect leads played with a ton of emotion, taste, melody and technique. The riffs are classic too You also got Graham Bonnet's incredible vocals including those high notes no human should be able to hit. Then the lyrics are cool but more than that the melodies are catchy as hell. A classic song that should have been a big hit but usually most of the best songs never become big hits.

I love both singers, Fohn Fox and Midge Ure. How different can you get? I had the ultimate pleasure of discovering this band with Midge Ure and then all over again with John Fox. A classic mix or art and punk. This song, and a lot of their first two albums always struck me as sounding like they were from an earlier time, yet at the same time sounding so new. Almost as if they came from an alternate history, in scifi terms. John Foxx's later albums were produced by someone using the name zeus b. held, probably Billy Currie, does anyone know? You can certainly see the influence of john Foxx on Ultravox by when he left. at least Ultravox didn't tank afterwards.

Think of Ultravox! as two different bands and you'll feel better. Both were great, for different reasons. The Foxx-era stuff was great, but so were Vienna, Rage in Eden, and Lament. All remain enjoyable after 20... EEEP! I mean 30 years. I can fault the Foxx Ultravox for being just a little too derivative of Bowie and Roxy Music, but if you're going to rip someone off, I hope it's Bowie and Roxy. The pre-Ultravox single (Tiger Lily) is actually embarrassing. It's way too campy/show-tunesy.

My favourite Ultravox was Midge, and all my school friends thought they were the business too. Who is right and who is wrong? At the end of the day you like what you like. Look at Marillion when Fish left. All the Marillion purists thought Hogarth couldn't replace Fish and the band wouldn't last 5 minutes. Fifteen or so years later, and the band that wouldn't last is better than ever. Ultravox aside, go and see Midge live when he comes around. You will be very pleasantly surprised.
