i think poeple judge a guitarist on different things, like speed, song difficulty, and such things like "feeling" or "soul". I think the feeling and soul part is in all musicians, it just sounds different between different guitarists. Jimi had a sort of blues in him, while metal players like speed and volume. I think the best thing to judge a guitarist on is the difficulty of the songs he plays, his skill should show his ability, not how much he loves the music. I love you Jimi.

Exactly, that's what a lot of people don't understand. People hear fast music such as Thrash (still good music) and judge it based on the fact that it is really fast and conclude that it's better than anything else. Perhaps the people playing it are more technically skilled than some others--perhaps--but it indicates little about their real musical talent. With as much respect as I have for Kirk Hammett, if he was alive I'm sure Jimi could have played Metallica's own music better than they can.

I just realized that hendrix really is better than satriani in my heart, and not just because of the old "he did it in the 60's before anyone else" argument. The first time I heard this song, I literally was in a trance, I hadn't felt this way ever before. I just listened to "Always With Me, Always With You", and I realized that I do feel when he plays, but I don't feel that trance when I first listened to "Little Wing" Of course after listening over 9000 times, the feeling is waning now...

My guitar teacher was great. one of the fastest greatest guitar players i've seen. You know what he told me? its all about "timing" the music was right for each era. Also, if you've ever bothered to hear Hendrix's recorded version of Sunshine Of Your Love, you'll notice he doesn't sing there either, in fact, he never sang the lyrics, ever, even live; and, in all seriousness, there was no single act he could have done in 1969 that would have ruined him (besides what obviously happened, R.I.P.), and he knew that.

While I understand why people think he's over-rated, I don't think they take into consideration how different his tone and approach was from what was prevalent in 1967. If you listen to something like Voodoo chile and compare the solo guitar tone and approach to a contempary song of the same period, they're drastically different.

Exactly Dfelts2323, the purpose of including bombings and screaming sounds in the US anthem was basically to denounce the vietnam war and the presence of US there. And he did in a festival of which the purpose was: 3 days of peace, love and music. well I mention him only because of all the deceased musicians listed Robert Johnson is the only one that can touch Jimi Hendrix. He is blues guitar legend. The story goes he sold his soul to the devil for guitar infamy and went on to record three albums before his untimely demise at the age of 27. This was late 1920's early 30's. He has been cited as a heavy influence by scores of great rock and blues players. His work has been covered by Led Zep, RHCP and Clapton to name just 3.
