Cancrizans Kastle's authentic interpretations may not be accepted by people who were trained to sanitize Liszt's great effects, but he's sounds more like Liszt than any of these other, "make it pretty" performers. All of the failed performances on the Liszt faking tour prove that these other guys are all media hype. You can't fake your way through all this technology. You can hear 20 fakers in 5 minutes flat!

First off, the two of you apparently don't grasp the essence of classical music, which has absolutely nothing to do with playing the piano to industrial tolerances. You can hear the authentic effects in Liszt's student Rosenthal's recording, who misses most of the notes or Kastle, whose recording is authentic and note perfect. HAMELIN LACKS THE SKILL TO PLAY THE ENDING He makes it easier, "interpreting" senza martellato -half volume. He ruins the climax. He's not Kastle!

HAMELIN PLAYS LISZT LIKE A ROBOT He doesn't know the harmonic pulse of gypsy melodies. He plays them all like a pizza parlour piano player who speeds through Joplin's two step rags. Kastle makes a clear difference between the meloncholy ones and the lighter ones. Hamelin doesn't understand the score. He dilutes the itensity of the Jimmy Hendrix style effects of sound building on top of sound by sanatizing them with a clean pedal. Kastle achieves Liszt's intended intensity.

Hamelin's playing is perfect. Kastle's fans don't consider the fact that this is a rhapsody from a romantic composer. While Kastle plays the right notes quite fast, he plays as if it was some classical etude. When playing something from Chopin, Liszt, Brahms or Mendelssohn, precision is not to worry about. When Kastle will play the whole piece with emotion, rubato, nuances, crescendos and some life, then maybe he won't need his fans to boast him on YouTube. Oh and Liszt did miss some notes.

I can play this song with just one of my toes... almost as fast as Richard Kastle can, but not quite on his level. I hear he can do this in thirds, fifths, and sixths. I of course cheat and cut half the movements. I move 130 times instead of the required 258 from 1:38 - 1:59

3:02-3:32 makes me wanna punch him in teh face cus its so good. not really hard technically but playing it as fluidly as he did... if u've ever worked with this piece, it's hard to keep from playing that section semi-marcato(not good). the only little thing in his performance that kinda gets on 2 me is the ending arpegios 4:09-4:25. liszt emphasized the main theme in that little passage with accents, but hamelin appreared to have run straight through it :(. overall, it was breathtaking

This is the best of all Un Sospiros on YouTube, IMO; Harold Bauer is # 2, followed by Arrau and Cliburn. This one captures the meaning of the title ( "A Sigh" ) better than any of them; bravo, Mr. Hamelin! You deserve to be better known.

Notice I didn't say that this was the only piece that would give a person a magical appearance. And no, speed isn't everything. However, that only depends on what you're playing fast. Finally, don't lecture me on expression: I brought tears to people's eyes before I even had a year's experience playing. I'm not yet technically ready for this one, but I cannot wait. How about alkan or godowsky? Or other composers or pieces that makes the same effect. When normal guy heards fast scales he is amazed because of the speed, but those aren't really that hard at all. So when you play right notes fast they are amazed as much as when you actually makes it to a music. Music is just more than right notes. That is one thing that it seems like it doesn't fit to everybody's mind.

My POV is that Alkan might be striving for a more raw form of beauty, rather than an abstract form - raw being manifested in the endless variety of performance elements built on relatively simple chords. He capitalised on the resource that he was so blessed to have FULL access to, that is technique and ways of playing a tune. Of course my argument might be wrong, but I hope it presents another way of looking at virtuosity for all those haters of 'showing off'-virtuosity out there.

For those who HAVE tried to look into his musicality and have not found beauty, I hope you'd take a second try. Alkan does have a style of short motifs and bursts, which may sound like random bangings, but looking at the bigger picture I do find beauty in his virtuoso works. Not to say that Chopin, Brahms etc. weren't phenomenal pianists, but we have to admit to the transcendental level of pianists like Liszt and Alkan - which is why the superultravirtuoso avenue of expression manifested in the music in this video is only open to those selected few. For Alkan's Op. 39, I urge haters to look past the virtuosity and into the music he is trying to convey - it is ridiculous that he wrote such a GIANT Opus just to show off his skill.

Of course there must have been an element of desire for showing off for these composers. But surely after a while they must have gotten used to showing off? And surely we can see that virtuoso elements persist in their music from young to old. That is why i feel virtuosity, while most obviously having the use of showing off, also should be treated as another avenue of musical expression.

After reading alot of comments about alkan's emptiness, i'd like to present my view. I feel that virtuoso writing is just another way of expressing your music especially if you have the ability to execute the music you've written. Such is the case for Liszt, Alkan, Thalberg and the likes - these virtuoso elements are present in their music because they can execute it themselves, and thus chose to use them to achieve the musical EFFECT that they desire.

But having analyzed the score in considerable detail I can tell you Alkan does not concentrate on the present; the formal structure works fully in the grand scale of the piece. In my opinion, Hamelin only concentrates on the moment. He is not a good interpreter of Alkan, believing one should merely play it as fast as the metronome mark, and in doing so losing sight of the large scale structure.

You are right hear. But also Hamelin's emphasis on speed means that each bar comes across as a challenge he is tying to overcome; trying to keep up to the tempo of the previous bar. In doing so Hamelin loses sight of a large scale interpretation, something which is completely deadly in a work of around fifty five minutes...

Mr. Hamelin is a fine performer of any composer, including his own work. Anyone who has seen him in person, as I have, or has been privilaged to own his recordings (I do) knows that his musicianship is without parallel. Obviously Beethoven is included in his repetiore; he chooses to share Alkan with us because he his moved by the composer's wit, skill, sensitivity and (above all) musical genius. These are all of the attributes that Beethoven posseses.

I love hamelin because he is a brilliant musician; when playing the piano, i belive that little emotion should be physically shown, but only through the body and the hands. the hands and the body produce the music for the piano, not the face, which is why i don't like it when a pianist shows a lot of facial expression (its over the top, really) Hamelin posseses the best technique in the world in my opinion and ive never seen him show facial expression.

The pros and cons of competition format are too numerous to list here, and I'm pretty sure you're well aware of them. But I think it's a mistake when people like Harold Schoenberg claim it's purely a modern formula for success. Bartok competed against Backhaus in his youth; Michelangeli redeemed himself at Geneva after being beaten to a pulp by Gilels. It's been an imortant process to attract and put to test their ability against duress for quite some time, and the judges are not incompetent

I think you are right. So sad that something like lang lang other "actors" has so much popularity. Lang lang is great player, but those ridiculous faces and stuff aren't nice to watch. When you are in competition and there are two players that you can not say which one is better, the winner is that one who makes more faces or big movements or something like "put one's soul into" piece. Or winner can be even worse than the other, but he got more stage skills.

I think he had a recital at the MET recently. I've seen him twice, and met him once. He's definitely a nice guy. As for popularity, I think there are certain factors... 1) He isn't particularly associated with any 'star' conductor for concerto performances (like Lang Lang and Eschenbach, Pollini and Muti/Abbado, Lewis and C. Davis, etc.) 2) He doesn't perform enough of the standard repertoire, and he records for a niche label 3) People mistake subtlety for boring, non spontaneous play

Well he's one of the best IMHO. He is the only classical performer to date who has one a Grammy, which says something about his rating. Then again, look what happened at said Grammy, he played a relatively simple piece (compared to his other works *cough alkan*). Additionally, he tends to play mostly lesser known composers, and lesser known (often, more difficult) works of well known composers. *shrugs* To say again, definitely one of the best.

I agree with you. The piano must vibrate like can a violin or human voice, specially in this thema of the beginning, veru intense. at least, give the illusion of that. This is an excelent performance!! Like everything Hamelin plays. When Busoni wrote this transcription he wasn't thinking about the original piece for the violin! He was probably trying to make the piano sound like a church organ or an orquestra!! This piece is more a Busoni piece then a Bach piece. A person saying that it should sound "like a violin piece" obviously doesn't know this transcrition well!!

That's because this transcription WAS written for piano. Busoni was a master pianist; Hamelin is playing his *transcription* of Bach's chaconne. Hamelin is a very intelligent man; he is likely very aware that this piece was originally for violin, and has probably heard it a thousand times. Again, though: this is not a transcription in the style of solo violin, so what binds Hamelin to playing it as such?

Great animation! I was lucky enough to meet Jiri Barta this summer. I studied at Famu, in Prague, and he presented the film there. He also brought along his original puppets, Piper puppet included! I got to talk with Barta and get some photos of him and the puppets. It was great! -CAP

It IS available on DVD. There are several places - one is chaletfilms.com (I've ordered from them and can recommend them). Also, search "krysar DVD" or "Jiri Barta DVD" on eBay (you may find something) or google (it's also sold on a DVD set of Barta's work). All the DVDs are PAL R2, so make sure your player can play them. Good luck! :)

Indeed, the whole film is great. I love stop-motion animation, and the Czechs were, and are, the masters. Watched a lot of this stuff as a kid, wish it'd be available on DVD.

radurak, a few difficult chromatic swirls may not produce a contrapunctual romantic piece, but you may have given Godowsky less credit than he deserves. true, Godowsky had good material to work on since the original Chopin etude was melodic. But Godowsky, whilst setting up challenging hurdles that implores technique, can create the most wonderous, and lyrical, pieces. Have you heard Java Suite?

for the record purenicotine was pretty flat out wrong... horowitz didn't play the HARD parts??? he performed the full set of scriabin etudes for which he was rightfully applauded; his accuracy and, more importantly, his musicality, was impeccable and unchangeable for his time. and mikecaffey DID make ridiculous arguments-to say the end of the hungarian rhapsody was the highest level of technique? one of the main points of that "rubbish" video was saying that it blatantly was not close.

I always considered Hamelin to be a second, no, third-rate pianist that was bad and therefore, couldn't rise to "world" fame. This video changed my opinion. Arrau once said soemthing like "Liszt's pieces are not just technical fireworks. They are chests that hold jewels of precious lyricism." Arrau himself was the only one that could bring lyricism out of Liszt, before I saw this man. Bravo, Hamelin. Encore!

I don't believe Lang is faking, I think he plays Horowitz's transcriptions because he prefers them. There's a major difference between me and caffey. The video made on the subject was such garbage, the only arguments that weren't at all non sensible or understandable were ridiculous requests saying, "hey, Kastle! If you're so great, why don't you learn and play this piece perfectly! And while you're at it, why don't you play this one too!" I chose not to debate there because it was too silly.

Any recording of Horowitz playing during the 80's will yield similar results in reference to what I've said. You'll also notice that he does not play Hungarian Rhapsody and a number of his other "athletic" pieces.
