To see Krupa just freekin' WAIL on those skins after the cowbell queue is purely astounding. Buddy Rich was bloody awesome and may have had more finesse, but Krupa had WAY more soul IMO. Krupa was from the old-OLD school. King Oliver's drummer Baby Dodds was a huge influence on Krupa.

I love BG's stuff but I can see where one might prefer Bechet et. al. One thing Benny had going for him though above all others was those amazing Fletcher Henderson arrangments. I think Fletcher's contribution to the Goodman legend is largely overlooked.

Yes, Tough is recognized as a great drummer, but nobody is recognized 'almost universally' as the greatest. That is a silly statement. Benny's favorite drummer was in fact Krupa (according to Bellson). Ellington's favorite was Bellson. Basie's favorite was Jo Jones. Krupa and Rich were much more than 'exhibitionists'. There are many exhibitionists who go onto youtube channels writing comments in an attempt to flash their higher aesthetic sensiblities to the masses.

Lil's version is closer to the Jessica Rabbit version if anyone is interested :P I think the 1942 version is Lee's with Lil's a year earlier. I don't think McCoy was on the Lil's version although I could be very wrong, Bill Broonzy is who she worked with at that time? What strikes me is so many of these artists die at an early age.

I have this on VHS. It is an hour long made for TV program called "The All Star Swing Festival" which was hosted by Doc Severinson. The Benny Goodman Quartet was just one segment within that hour, and some of the other numbers they performed were Avalon, Moonglow, and (I think) Memories of You. I really don't know if it's available any more.

Not that it matters much, but I'm wondering if you are thinking about the concert at Carnegie Hall in the summer of '73...it may have been Gene's final perfomrance, and if memory serves it was Newport Jazz Festival. That was the concert when they had to help Gene in the manner you describe. I don't know if he was that sick in '72 at Lincoln Center. God Bless.

Hearing and seeing them is like an old frined, and this sound will never go out of style. No, my father was Frank Melrose. He played piano in the 20's and 30's with primarily black musicians. His last recording was made in 1941. He was brutally murdered that same year.
