i get bored to death of the generic blues i hear all the damn time. i can hear middle aged men playing blues guitar with mediocre bands all day long without trying. hell, i can go to a blues festival and do that for three days and get some barbecue while im at it. honestly i have to agree with you he was VERY simplistic in his playing, if you compare it to jazz guitarists they'll blow him out if the water but hes still good at what he does though, and its almost like he doesnt need to play to many notes

When Jackie left TV, CBS (his network)agreed to pay him $100,000 a year NOT to do a another series on another network -- insurance money. Note that Gleason recognized Tom Hanks's acting talent YEARS before he was accepted as an actor (beyond a comedian) -- before he won two Oscars. Gleason was talent,and he knew talent when he saw it.

He did admit a few years before his death that he regretted not doing one more season of The Honeymooners. But Jackie was concerned about the quality of his show. He could have made more "good" shows, but he held a standard with the classic 39 that he didn't want diminished with possibly a mediocre set of future programs.

I really think acid is one of the most difficult drugs to emulate on screen. I've seen other ones done successfully, but acid is much more difficult. I think Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (when the carpet was moving) and Renegade (when he takes Peyote) are some of the best portrayals of a a REAL trip. Not necessarily a good one, but a REAL ONE.

"Requiem" was a powerful & disturbing film, but it wasn't much of an actor's venue, I found...Burstyn phoned it in and Connelly was this radiant fallen-angel image who barely spoke. Turns out Jared Leto was the carrying actor, & was incredible.

A few fun facts. Reggie's father is of course Art Carney and his mother is played by Zamah Cunningham, better known to Honeymooner's fans as Mrs. Manicotti. The Reggie character was loosely based on the rich playboy character Rodney St. Clair, which was originated by one of Gleason's favorite silent comedians, Ben Turpin. And that great theme music for the Reggie character is called Shangri-la. It was written in 1946 and became a big vocal hit in 1957 by a group called the Four Coins.

swatchtica?! What are you smokin? It's a stick figure outline/sketch. And besides, the swastik is a sign of good fortune/luck. Only later did the Nazi's remake it into their party symbol and made the lines wider/bolder and changed the angle of rotation from the ancient design. looks like must be standard tuning, not tenor which is c,g,d,a. - his inversions are all too close and range is not high enough to be tenor. I'm saying this as a tenor player, it could be something else. I wish he'd played more and arsed around a bit less, music=good, comedy=good, not sure sometimes about the two together. ps. wasn't kackie gelason a fat actor from the 80s (i remember a film with Richard Pryor) Also, what the heck is a knee mute? I agree that they all appeared to know and love one another. It was also a time when everyone didn't wear their sensitivities on their sleeves and get "offended" by something obviously said in love and in jest. The language factor, though, ruins it for me. When you see comedy like this, without filthy language, you see what real talent and genius is, IMO.

In comparing these roasts with the more recent ones i think the use of bad language isn't that relevant. More importantly u get the feeling from the dean martin ones that its a bunch of good mates taking the absolute piss (sorry, "mick") out of each other. Whereas the recent ones smack of people who dont know the roastee particularly well getting paid to turn up and slag them off for cheap laughs.

yes, that's who Stan Freberg based the voice on. Freberg did the voice again on a cartoon short from Warner Brothers called "Pullet Surprise" in 1997. Chuck Jones had re-opened an animation department at the studio in the early 1990s and several new cartoon shorts were created and shown in movie theaters for a short period of time. PULLET SURPRISE was one of them. Anyway, Freberg's the voice of Pete Puma, in RABBIT'S KIN, and in PULLET SURPRISE, giving him the Guggenheim voice for comedy effect

Wikipedia does have a lot of good information but it's also has it errors because it's a user-contributed web-site where anyone can add or edit things. Stan Freberg's the voice actor of Pete Puma as he often appears in person on the Warner Brothers DVD's doing the voice and gives commentary on various Pete Puma-related merchandise since he's the man who gave the character it's voice on the cartoons. It was based on Frank Fontaine's Guggenheim character, of course.

I heard Danny Thomas observe to Luci Arnaz once, in reference to her father's own greatest talent, "If you don't have a great straight man, you don't have any laughs." The reason these segments work so riotously well as they do, is because, great a comedian as he was, Gleason was an even better straight man. Can anyone supply an actual source for this clip, as in a DVD or VHS title? This would have to be from late 1953. Frankie began recording by March, 1954 under the guidance of Ray Anthony who adapted a couple of tunes for him, "Trumpet Tarantella" and "Trumpet Sorrento", recorded on RCA's "X" label. The next time you'd hear him on record, he'd be singing in 1957, recording only one trumpet track for an early album. He next played trumpet appearing in VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (the movie).

Your correct that "Life of Riley" did star William Bendix and Rosemary DeCamp in the 1949 movie and the 1953 series co-starred Marjorie Reynolds with Bendix but the forgotten 1949 version of the TV series of the same name starred a near unknown Jackie Gleason in his 1st TV series and also co-starred, Rosemary DeCamp. (I have several of his shows). Bendix also did the radio version.

It's coming back to me now. I also remrmber the stark flat they lived in. Joyce Randolph played "Trixie Norton". I have several of his "Life Of Riley" shows from about 1949. In the early 50's his "Kramden" character on the Gleason Show was later to become the "Honeymooners". His show was revived in the mid 60's. He did several more movies (Smokey & the Bandit) and specials before his death in 1987 at age 71. A GREAT entertainer and sadly missed.

Are you sure this is Frankie Avalon? Jackie Gleason didn't start his variety show until 1949 on the Dumont Network. At that time he was relatively slim. He moved to CBS in 1952. Based on his weight in this clip, this appears to be from his CBS days, probably 1953 or later. Frankie Avalon was born in 1939, so he would have been at least 14 at this time. The kid here looks much younger than that. Then again, Frankie Avalon was always pretty short.

I can understand your point of view, it is difficult not being cynical when questioning the honour of these pro-athletes who make so much money. But the vast majority of the fighters do live by an unwritten code. There have been, and will continue to be exceptions to this rule. But the fact of the matter is, that it is a far cleaner game then what it was in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also, if you aren't wearing a visor, why should you have to take your helmet off?

If fighters were honorable, they would ALWAYS take their buckets off in every fight. How often do you see that? Not very. Piss poor example of honor. If fighters had honor, they wouldn't continue to punch a guy after they get him down to the ice or when the ref's intervene. Rarely see that now too. If you're a little guy you have to get the quick jersey grab and then pull the big guy's head down. Classic Domi strategy. If you can get the spin going too it's hard to defend, because being bent over and spinning around you have bad balance. It's hard to fight when you have a little monster hanging off your neck. Gleason lost his helmet when Jenson checked him along the boards. Agreed with what you stated. Back in minor hockey, we had to wear full-face shields or masks. If you took your helmet off before a fight, you would get yourself kicked out of the league. I always thought it made the fighting a little more interesting, not to mention skillful, to see who was quicker at getting the other guy's lid off. You just didn't want to fight a guy who had a major height advantage over you- he'd fuck you up.
