Nobody said that rap sounds bad ... it's just that it's always delivered at the same tempo with the same attitude, regardless of the artist. Plus, rap doesn't demand development of talent and ability with melody and composition. I have yet to see a rapper who's also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and can do something OUTSIDE rap. It often seems to me that it's the rappers who are small-minded rather than the true musicians.

I grew up with this music. I have heard this song so many times but never had the pleasure of seeing it performed. Something I notice here and in so many of these '60's vid clips is that the performers are the focus. No fancy lights, (mostly) no outrageous clothes, simple sets, computers, etc. Just people making music with memorable tunes that will last forever. Thanks for posting!

I was 22 when the 'Stones released Gimme Shelter in 1969, but I have been enjoying much of their music since 1963/4. Of all the various version of Gimme Shelter that are available to listen to I especially like this one by Michael Hedges. It's very haunting and beautifuly played in the style of a lament or a ballad by sombody who has been shaken by the consequences of war rather than as in the 'Stones release where Mick Jagger is warning of what is to come.
