he was walkin down the street when two undercovers spotted him do a " handshake thing" with a guy and get a ball of tinfoil but no money exchange. they come up and question and search him and find cocaine in his pocket. But with out a good lawyer he just pleaded guilty and went to rehab to beat the jail sentence. can't afford to defend the fact that w/o probable cause they had no right to search him. Even tho he did the drug, and his rights were violated. Glad he's out n off the drugs tho.

Aw, com'n now...he (Gil) had lots of help from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, here. It's not like he had to figure out those harmonies "from scratch"! Same with Gershwin on Rhapsody in Blue. To me, Miles is like Stanley Clarke when they solo. They always pick the "coolest" last three notes to end a phrase with :-)

i don't think you can't stretch it more harmonically. i don't know how gil evans managed to hear some of those harmonies in his head. probably because he also wrote film-scores. it is amazing. imagine all the work behind an arrangement like this and then the commercial outcome which must have been minimal. he gave all he had. and miles plays great. some people say he plays scarce. i think it's just the right amount and musical as heck.

I saw Gil on both his Australian tours in the 90s with essentially this band. Amazing the first time... unbelievable energy, soul and skill... but second time, sadly Gil was too messed up to hold it together. Watched this great band taking 10 minute solos while GSH nodded off at the keyboards. Hope things are better now for Gil. A great prophet and musical originator. Eternal gratitude and respect.

If you haven't heard the 1970's studio cut of this tune check it out, it's the best version; it's got a spacey keyboard flourish at the start, the drums are low key but in the pocket, and at the end when the horn section enters the groove I get tingles up my spine every time without fail.
