7 is small in comparison to most modern players who use 8's 9's and 10's. I didn't say it was the smallest. I said it was small. and that's relative. If I played a 4*, it would be big. but I play an 8*, so it's small. I would safely say more people play something bigger than a 7. So there again, It's small.

If I were you I would be more careful in putting down other people. You make mistakes too: you describe a 7 opening as small. Wrong! The smallest opening on a tenor sax mouthpiece is usually a 4 or 4*. Stan Getz' technique:he used a reed 4 and sometimes a 5 on a Otto Link mouthpiece. But when you look at his face in playing you see the masseter and temporal muscles (of the jaw) work hard. I absoultely admire Stan Getz. My CD collection of him runs at 260+ CDs. I am used to playing clarinet, where harder=better. I got this sorted long ago by HELPFUL people who didn't diss me out of the building. At the time I had only been playing for 3 months and still didn't know the fine points of the saxophone. I instead assumed it was similar to the clarinet. I was obviously wrong and people told me, thats for dam sure. So thanks for the advice (even though 5 people told me previously).

Oh my god, you're so ignorant it hurts me physically. The kind of reed or the strength doesn't mean shit. Anyone can use any strength of reed, but they use the kind that they sound best with. Typically anything from from a 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 are used. Michael Brecker used 2-1/2's and a small tip opening (7), but, look at him. Paul Desmond played rico 5's. It doesn't mean shit what you play as long as it sounds good. I'm going to assume by your obvious inexperience that you're shitty.

You know I have listened to this clip for a couple of years now & everything U say is true. However, I just think that in the spirit of truth that we must say that Coltrane is almost (for the time period, anyhow) from a different planet! Getz and Oscar and everyone sounds GREAT but, come on, am I wrong in saying that Coltrane is tapped into some kind of something that is beyond words? sounds like Cm piano to me. You practise that better in all keys you can think of just thinking II(the IV of the minor key)V I IV of the relative major) then II V (relat minor again). When you know this tune by feel,in more keys, you will find lots of other tunes including classical music which use theese steps.

Sorry, I need to correct a mistake in the last comment. It was very late when I wrote that and my tired mind got it wrong. Raised a 4th the chart plays in G for Eb instruments, not in F as I stated. Excuse the error. If you Raise the original chart a 4th you would play it in C on Alto.

The original chart (fakebook and Aebersold both) is in Bb concert, which is C on the tenor. So if he's playing it a 4th higher it would be in F on the tenor, which in fact is what it transposes to for Alto. I have the Alto chart from the Eb fakebook taken from Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and it is in F, but written in the lower octave. I sometimes play it up an octave thought. You can play any tune up an octave to get the brighter sound you are referring to rather than the deep bellkey tones.

Check out some transcriptions of Getz (or do your own), and you can see the guy really "felt" the harmony even on complex chords, for example he will make a big leap and hit an altered note (say b5) on the next measure. And we're not talking contrived II-V licks or something, but by melodic invention. Good examples from the bossa nova recordings. Anyway this is metalanguage...the music speaks for itself.

The 1st Herd appeared in the movie "New Orleans", which also featured Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. It was released in 1947 but filmed before the Four Brothers Band came into existence. Clips are liable to turn up on You Tube at some point.

You are RIGHT and I stand corrected. I see that Sam Marowitz played in both bands (Lamond too) as they are are in the Mosaic set of The complete Columbia recordings of Woody from 1945-1947. Laporta is in that set. It's the 1st Herd on discs 1-5. Woodchopper on disc 6 and the Second Herd on disc 5. Stravinsky with Herman is at the end of disc 5. I am REALLY wishing a video will surface with the 1st Herd with Dave Tough on drums.

The saxes are Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims (tenor), Serge Chaloff (baritone) and Sam Marowitz (alto). John La Porta played second alto in the Second Herd. This is the Four Brothers band. Sam Marowitz's brother returned from Europe at the end of WW II with a top hat that belonged to Adolf Hitler.

You draw a negative, generalized conclusion about jazz musicians that's unfounded. There may be some like you describe, but the jazz world includes millions of people from different countries/backgrounds, with many different approaches to learning. Come on! :D Playing an instrument is a journey, it's normal that musicians should want to share specific techniques - the saxophone especially for intonation...if they didn't put in the practice you wouldn't be hearing music like this video...

Getz has a lot of control form the throat, judging by the way he inflates when blowing. Some real note bends in there. It looks like he's putting a lot of physical work into blowing, I wonder - would his embouchure have been pretty flexible/loose? I am told loose embouchure = more agility in leaps + allows partials to sound

This performance is from TV Studio Apollo in Düsseldorf/Germany on April 4,1960 in the afternoon (I was there as an invited guest). Coltrane had the Miles Davis rhythm section, but Getz used for his own section Jan Johansson on piano, on the combined set there was Wynton Kelly of course.

Well, they are very different and I wouldn't say that this is boring; however, I would say that, primarily, this version is at a obviously slower tempo, and Tony Williams and Stan Getz, albeit both legendary players and, in my opinion, better than Airto and Flora; still weigh down the song a lot more than Airto and Flora did. Perhaps that is because Chick's concept on the "Light As A Feather" album may have been exactly that. This version sounds "Heavy As A Brick". Both versions are enjoyable.

Stan must have gotten sick of this stuff after a while. Not that he didn't love Latin American music, but to be asked to play the same tunes over and over again was painful. I had a chance to talk with him in New Orleans in the early 80s when I was doing a gig there, and he said if he heard one more request for "Ipanema" he was going to shoot himself.
