I disagree i felt that the story was very well done because these chareactors where not good people thats what made it compelling that the game didnt try to glamurize these crimnals and the charectors are very well rounded and i will admit the game gets a little like WTF sometimes but overall its a good game

Lol... first of all: Alan Wake has nothing to do with IOI. 2nd: Most developers who have their own engine always upgrade their old one. Quake 4 and Quake Wars feature the Doom 3 engine, the Half-Life 2 Episodes use the HL2 engine and Mass Effect still uses an upgraded MDK2 engine! So what's your point? I agree, K&L was a rush (caused by Eidos) but the game still is great and now seriously: The first levels suck but Japan and Kuba simply look fantastic. Think more before you write such shit.

Why? They were lazy fucks who didn't even bother creation a new engine and instead go with their outdated old engine. By the time Hitman BM came out it was already just OK. Look - I know that everyone has his own opinion on a game. Personally I don't like Diablo 2 but I understand all those guys who like it. I hate CoD4 but I would be able to write a positive review about the game since I think that's it's actually a good game. I agree with you. But those official reviewers' job is to give us a perspective that helps us decide whether to pay for a game or not. But Gerstmann didn't give the viewers of K&L such an option. He did anything to prevent the viewers and readers from playing K&L and that's simply not doing his job. I've seen five other reviews of K&L and all of them were quite positive while also mentioning the aspects some players might not like. This just confirms that Jeff is an unprofessional reviewer.

Screw the multiplayer part - I didn't even try playing multiplayer and still I love this game. And according to his review nobody can enjoy the game while most people I know (including me) had no problems with the controls, the story, the graphics, the music, the voice acting or anything. How can you call his review a worthy one if he simply said that just these aspects, that many people love about the game, simply suck? There are much more professional ways to share your opinion than his one...

Come on guys - are you all that stupid? The game is great - this means: at least I like K&L. And this means that there must be at least some good things about the game (while I think that almost everything is great about it) but Jeff didn't point out any of them. Why? He was behaving like a pussy in the K&L review! A reviewer's job is to describe a game's content while rating it so that someone knows the big deal about it but he just sat there pissing on the disc! (not literally - I hope...)

It makes alot of sense how he was fired just after he landed a review infact saying in his video review "rent this" as apposed to buying it. And this review came out just at the time the publisher was paying mega mullah for advertisements and they were trying to sell their initial copies. Lol. Gaming isn't for "nerds". But it is for a specific crowd of people. When you start making games for casual gamers, your games start sucking. Then you try making games for both casual gamers and hardcore gamers. Here's the difference: Hardcore gamers prefer HARDCORE, CHALLENGING GAMES THAT CASUAL GAMERS COULD NEVER POSSIBLY PLAY. This is why video games are so hard to place as an art. I can't say games don't earn it but i can say not all games deserve to be called art. Accepting that cut scenes, world building, and dialogue bubbles are mimetic functions fully explored in other media, I don't see games as art. Something like it, though, in the better cases. Video game reviews really don't have any business talking about that though. I have a strong emotional attachment to Soul Calibur. According to you "fighting games suck." You wouldn't consider it art, but for my money, I have far more emotional attachment to playing that than Shadow of the Colossus.

The story is relayed through cut scenes, the techniques of which are borrowed from the visual language belonging to film. They can be analyzed from the perspective of editing, framing, and mise-en-scene. What makes it fun to play is that it is a game. What makes you qualified to judge the literary merits of a video game story? You're right that a large part of literature is prosaic style, device, etc. However, good literature generally has a coherent story. I can't say the same for video games in general. You mention Shadow of the Colossus as an example of good story telling in games. I agree, but it's also the rare exception. If everyone keeps thinking convincing themselves games have bad stories, they'll never appreciate a good one when it comes a long. Shadow of the Colossus I think is more literary than Metal Gear Solid 4 or Final Fantasy could ever be. It also uses the unique part of gameplay, interactivity, to tell part of that story, and to set a mood, other games haven't done that before without the aid of cutscenes. I think Jeff is close minded, he hasn't even played SOTC, and only enjoys MGS cuz its "crazy"

I think most people just assume that games don't have a good story, but don't actually have a literary background knowledge. I don't want to accuse you of anything, but that tends to be the case. Plus most stories in books isn't so much the story itself, it's the devices used throughout. Metaphors, foreshadowing, juxtpositions, etc. The Scarlett Letter for instance is a pretty simple story, just packed with those types of literary things. [Continued]

He's mostly right about this. Most video games are approached as products with an end goal of profit. This means that (by and large) there might be a good deal of craftsmanship that goes into a video game, but rarely does it transcend its nature as a time filler and profit maker to actually become art. Besides, examining popular "story-based" games like MGS, Final Fantasy etc. from a literary perspective, they fall far short of mediocrity.
