He smashed the guitars etc. because he was pissed off that they had to go on before sunset. Supposedly, they were to start their set right at sundown, so the light show would be visible. When they were called on to play early, he locked himself in his dressing room and refused to play, until the network (ABC) called the cops to retrieve him. Why the cops would intervene is unclear - the only crime would've been breach of contract. This is all on Wikipedia...

This event was the 1974 California Jam concert and is out on DVD. I have it. Just go to E-Bay and type in Deep Purple California Jam and you'll see 'em. DVD is cheap to pick up. This was done at a speedway in California and televised on the ABC network at the time.

Hendrix, a god, He was ahead of his time. One of the most,if not the most influential Guitar player ever. But from the technique standpoint I say Blackmore was the best. He very underated from the public, but a great Guitarist and great song writer. Nobody in 1972 played like Blackmore. Page is OK in his own way, but I like Blackmores style more. Also, Uli Jon Roth Is incredible.

There's NO reason to even compare the two. Totally different music and sounds. They're both great! I love Ritchie. He's one of my fave left-handers ever and Page with Zep was incredible! Ritchie was more consistent live but again, I hate all of this "who's better?" talk that's EVERYWHERE on Youtube. Music is art, it's not a competition. That's just my opinion.

Blackmore is definitely the better guitar player, like unto a god if you ask me, but Page had a HUGE creative footprint as far as being influential....for instance, he brought alternate tunings to the attention of rock players, who had never really explored them before Page.

Thank, Darkhorse.., for the plug for that DVD, I'll have to check it out. I've got all of Rainbow's music releases, but not the DVD's. I do have one of the live videos from the 80's. I didn't say BTW, that Ritchie didn't know how to play fingerstyle back then, cuase he learned as a kid already, I just meant he's adapted it to Renaissance specifically as opposed to just your "ordinary" Classical which was what he 1st learned fingerpicking with according to his own words.

BTW, since not all Renaissance pieces were played this way, being that many were played with a pick (plectrum is the word for it from that era), Ritchie's continued playing many pieces with one. Generally, the rule of thumb is that when playing with backup musicians as with his band, a pick is used, but when self accompanying, then it's not. Of course there are exceptions.

Like I've said before Ritchie's THE most versatile guitar god out there. Notice he plays this piece fingerstyle without missing a note, not something that should be easy for someone who usually has played with a pick, since he was "corrupted" as he's put it by Rock n' Roll. Nonetheless, Ritchie's not only built another repertoire since switching to Renaissance, but has developed his fingerstyle technique to adapt as well.

Blackmore at his prime was amazing to watch, it's a shame he's fucked off to go play Stratolute, now. Scalloped fretboards like his made bending and vibrato a lucid dream, so Ritchie always sounds good. He had possibly the best chops of the 70s (granted, his only real competition comes from Beck, Page and Iommi), and while he doesn't have the same sense of rhythm as those three, his classical sensibilities are unique, to say the least. Dio was an amazing vocalist, and he's still got it! H&H.
