This is 14 years ago. Not sure how long Stanton has been a well known drummer. I doubt that long. But Gregg has always had great feel in many, many styles of music. He plays w/more feeling/emotion then any player I have ever seen. My absolute biggest influence.

Have to agree. Gregg played around and w/the beat. He made it interesting to me. Love Gregg's style playing in general. Dennis is great of course, but he just seemed to throw in as much notes as possible w/no rhyme or reason. Not my style. Gregg and Dennis are great, but different. But Gregg's just as good as Dennis.

I watched the entire Burning For Buddy DVD I rented off Next Flix and personally I liked this here one over all the others. I thought his song swung (swung ? or is it swinged ?) more then the other top level drummer also on the video. Not saying anything down about the other drummers no way they are the top drummers. First off, if being a versitile drummer that can play AND read just about anything thrown in front of them makes for an over rated drummer, I wish I was that lucky. Second off Gregg does read music. Its part of his JOB. Gregg may not always read note for note, but he also uses charts as a guide to changes in the music. If he didn't read, how could he use it as a guide? Not pissed either. My guess it was right around 1990. I used to set up Gregg's drums in the early 90's and I set up for him a hand full of times when he did trio shows w/Him, Steve and T in the L.A. area. Also in 86 & 87 he was still w/Yamaha drums. Just my thoughts on it.

Most drummers badly need to be taught that LESS IS MORE. No one needed to teach it to Ringo. I forget the addy. There is a great tribute site for Ringo with a long list of quotes by famous percussionists. He is very well respected by the greats. This video is so badly mic'ed the sound is awful. Ringo is NOT the greatest. But, he obviously is one of the better recording studio percussionists of all time. Read Bakers comment about trying to capture his high hat method and he could not.

I took lessons from this guy in high school, way back when he was in the "One O'Clock" jazz band at UNT. Wow, what a great guy! Gregg is one of the most positive guys I've ever met! He's a really sweet guy, and very funny! I went to a gig to watch him play once and he yelled at me to pick up something, anything, to play along with him during his latin drum solo, which I did! What a nice guy! Great job here. He's really in his element here!!!

Symmetry44, when he played with Maynard Ferguson, I got the feeling he might always be a little too heavy for jazz (which applied to Ferguson and many of his band members, too!) but when he went off with David Lee Roth, I thought that his talents were mostly wasted, with much more to say than what he was actually used for. I'd rather hear him play something a little unsuited to the style than just bang away on 1 and 3, which is probably the point you were making.

This stuff always makes me laugh. A lot of people like Dennis because of how fast he is. Yes he's fast. But drummers that choose to not always be fast are just as good. Gregg is a Feather duster? Thats a new one. Maybe he uses the money he makes from his studio work, clinics, tours and other drumming avenues to feather dust his house. How is it you make your money? Agreed, jlebesis. I've been a fan of Matt and Gregg (and the Wackerman's too) from the time they played with Ferguson (who had a LOT of great young players develop in his band.) It seems like all four of them have held a lot of the same gigs at various times over the years. Given the different styles they've covered, those who think of Matt as having one style probably haven't been listening enough.

Assuming you like fretless slap's tone, which I despise, slapping (and playing on fretless in general) can "carve" the top a bit, and that'll reshape the fingerboard slightly, but enough where you start fretting out/getting dead or wolf notes.
