No, this isn't a Vivaldi transcription. The only one of Bach's harpsichord concerti that is a Vivaldi transcription is the Concerto for 4 Harpsichords BWV 1065. This concerto (BWV 1052) is a transcription of a lost Bach original violin concerto.

Hmm... The audio doesn't seem to match up to the video... I am playing this with a youth orchestra (I play percussion) and the audio is right, but the picture doesn't seem to match up. You can see on the last few bars when the conductor cues the last note about half a bar too early.

The character Candide is supposed to be kind of a simpleton, is he not? It's a deceptive simplicity, though. I have to question whether ad80ad has ever played or done score study of this piece to know the complexity of the crossrhythms and abruptly shifting tempi.

Rustic band? This is written for orchestra. It has nothing to do with rock or pop music. You could argue that Bernstein has some jazz influence, but this is an overture. Its nice, and catchy, which is what an overture is suppose to do. People think way too hard about it.

I love this piece... my high school band played this the year before I moved up to the top ensemble, my college orchestra played it the year after I transferred, the community/church wind ensemble I was with played it the year after I left that group, and then the wind ensemble at the school I transferred to just played it yesterday...in my first semester NOT in ensemble (I'm finished with the credits). Seriously? I am NEVER meant to play this piece. I've come to that conclusion.

1) LOVE the mallet percussion! I'm doing xylophones at the moment in band and I love really fast passages 2) His method of conducting is really interesting. It seems to vary from conductor to conductor, but his by far is my favourite :)

Easy to get it mixed up, but I didn.t: it's Berklee I was referring to. I actually made my Master Arranging certificate there. Berklee is a world class College of non-classical music in Boston, MA. They are considered poineering in teaching and notating non-classical music such as jazz, rock, gospel, funk, latin etc. UC Berkeley -on the other hand - is a (very highly regarded) research university in California. It's easy to get them both mixed up.

This BSO performance is probably around 1973 in Tanglewood. The best performance I have ever heard. The strings are easily as good as Philadelphia, maybe better. He was very charismatic and changeable. This was before Ozawa tainted them a bit. Now with Levine, Boston is again on top.

Out of all the vids I've seen of Bernstein on youtube, this always makes me the most elated. The vids of him in the late '80's always made me sorry for him, he seemed so tired and exhausted. There was this conductor I saw on TV in berlin after performing a concert. He sweated a LOT, conducted with a toothpick, and looked a lot like wagner. That's why I searched "sweating" "toothpick" "wagner" and found Gergiev. Absolutely brilliant, both of them.

I saw Gergiev conduct Tchaikovsky 6 at the Proms two years ago. He is as intense as Bernstein - a phenomenal sight at the Royal Albert Hall. I'm just sorry I never saw Bernstein conduct when he was around.

I must say I loved this rendition. The theme (by strings starting 5:30) progresses from mellow, touching (even sentimental) and deeply nuanced, to brillante, vibrant and confident by the end of this part - from one end of the spectrum to the other. Throughout, well-controlled, carefully performed and smooth as silk - pure harmony and bliss to the ears. Tugs deeply at the heartstrings! Magnificient! And the bassoonist (6:06) is a cute chap!

the reason the info says "ode to freedom" and not "ode to joy" is that the recording took place in berlin about a month after the fall of the berlin wall! thats why the soloist in part two of the video sings "freiheit"(= freedom) and not "freude" (= joy)

I almost only listen to classical or jazz music and I myself am a cellist. However, you can't say that all rap is trash. While probably most of the rap that you hear is trash, because the stuff that gets played is often just "pop rap" like Lil Wayne or 50 cent, there are some good rap artists. Bands like The Roots, who's older music is a fusion of thought provoking rapping and bop jazz. Don't talk about the genre when you don't know what you're talking about.

I like how Kremer has 0 shyness in showing his emotions for his music, and that comes out in his playing. My teacher alwasy says to look at him for inspiration if I feel shy moving around or makign faces while playing. I love his playign in teh four saesons the most though hehe. Nice. Personally, I like the Itzhak Perlman recording better, but I think that has more to do with the tempo than with the quality of the playing; I just like it a little slower. Still, who am I to say something against the Vienna Philharmonic and Gidon Kremer? It's not like you could really go wrong with that combination.

Bernstein is a superb player and possesses great technique as well as feel. The "nothing unintentional" suggests that he is stiff or too deliberative in his playing. He is a creative improviser who works within a musical frame of reference but I don't think he is constricted or excessively deliberative in his playing. As you say, he has impeccable taste and the phrasing and note selection emerges organically from the process.

what i admire most about peter bernstein is that he never ever, not ONE single time seems to be playing a note that would be anything close to unintentional. his phrasing is impeccable, and he's always on top of what he's doing. speaking of pure technique, there are better players (metheny anyone?), but when it comes to note choice, taste, development of motives etc etc, he's surely on par with the best.

i wish there were more guitarists in this world who were as unafraid as mr. bernstein to play less, instead of firing off all those flashy, unimaginative licks 90% of the time. that, plus his ability to develop his lines so effortlessly into melody after melody after melody are what make him stand out head and sholders above the rest (save a couple few people mayba, but VERY few), in my opinion. what a god amongst men.
