As much as I love Dr.Fager(in my opinion the greatest miler in history),he would have had no chance going against Sec at this distance,maybe at a 1 1/4 miles,but not at a 1 1/2 miles! As a current Thoroughbred Jockey, I have most admiration for this AMAZING ATHLETE! horses that we ride usually take atleast a month and a half off inbetween races. Secretariat ran 3 races in 5 weeks with the BEST horses in the world. VERY FEW HORSES have EVER won the Triple Crown. What is even MORE crazy is the fact, that this athlete Won by 31 lenghs.(length is one horse, nostrils, to tail) This has NEVER been seen and I will take to my death on the track (lol) that it will NEVER be seen again!

Really knowledgable racing fans will make sure that Smarty Jones will be remembered as one of the greatest racehorses NOT to win the triple crown. People this horse had unreal talent,he was really a sprinter/miler with his bloodline and his attitude. Yet he was smart and learned (except in this race of course)to relax and wait for the signal to go. That is not always easy to teach by the way. Remember he still hung on after going a 1 1/4 in 2:00 1/5! Think long and hard on that for a moment!!!!

CONT:Only Secretariat could have kept running faster at that kind of pace. Heck his pace was the fastest in the races history. He did it because he had a physically HUGE HEART. It allowed him to do what is impossible for any other known racehorse. Other than not having a Huge physical heart,he showed he had everything else. Remember a final time of 2:27 and change or even 2:28 is a very respectable time. A cow's time,please give me a freakin break,that comment is very uninformed to say the least

Someone said Smarty collapsed in cow's time of 27 seconds? Then said after a 1/2 in 48 & change theres no excuse,really? How about running the 2nd 1/2 mile in 46 & change,6furlongs in 1:11 & change,and a mile in 1:35 2/5(the 2nd fastest mile time in Belmont S. history,by the way) a 1 1/4 in 2:00 1/5 (I believe). Now that sounds like a slow pace to you? Well it is not slow,and for him to cover the last 1/4 in a LITTLE over 27 seconds did nothing to sour his reputation. Only Sec could win that.

Smarty had two fillies in the Fasig-Tipton Lexington Sale. They were both very nice looking. The first went for $150K the second went for $65K. The first I thought was worth a little more, the second I thought went a little high. I bid on the Second fillie, hip 33 but dropped out at 50K. She was the horse I saw on my previous trip to Lexington, when we did a private vet on the Tiznow colt. I bid 5K over my limit for her because I liked her nasty disposition!! She was the alpha of the pack!

Yes I did here about it, and then watched a replay of it on TVG. I went to Lexington for the Fasig-tipton sale, did some bidding but didn't buy anything. One colt that I was top bidder on, did not meet the reserve. The SJ mare that I was looking at went for $65K whick was about 20K higher than our formula thought that she should sell for. I will be heading to Saratoga for the Aug sale and then Sept is Keeneland. I am trying to buy a Tiznow colt privately before the Saratoga sale.

LOL. Now that's exactly why I cherish this race. I lost my voice at the time and could watch it all day. If Smarty had held on there would have been relentless nonsense that he was the equal of Slew. Meanwhile, he collapsed over the final quarter, in cow's time of well over 27 seconds. No excuse on a fast track and after an opening half of 48 3/5. He's remembered now and in the short term, but down the road he'll be blanketed in obscurity, well earned. And it was a great call by Durkin.

I rarely think its a good call when the announcer does not call the winner. However, this was an exception. One of TD's best. I recall that Kent moved Real Quiet out in the last few jumps interfering with Victory Gallop. I think there was an inquiry so RQ probably would have been DQ'd had VG not won anyway.

You're correct, Kent did start his move too soon. Infact, he started his move somewhat with 3/4s of a mile to go and most people with horse sense or smarts know that a horse only has a good 3/8ths to 1/2 mile all out burst.

I last watched this race ten years ago, live on TV. This was my first set of Triple Crown races and not only got me hooked on racing, I'm going into it professionally now. Real Quiet is a Triple Crown winner in my books; I'm surprised people don't talk about it more, because it's the closest Triple Crown loss in history.

I agree. The more I watch this race I can't fault Desormeaux. He surged to an extreme advantage position and it took a great rally by a very versatile horse to barely nip him. Meanwhile, I'm always curious about the guys in the infield who turn and celebrate immediately after the horses hit the wire. Do they think Real Quiet held on? He's closest to them so it probably appeared he won.

Real Quiet should have won. you cant blame kent for real quiet or big brown. why did real quiet lose? well, real quiet wore blinkers, and couldnt see victory gallop creeping up on him. real quiet thoguht the race was over. had he of seen victory gallop from the outside, he would have been able to held him off. the blinkers is what gave victory gallop the advantage. amazing ride by kent.

I have watched this video several times and i have to say that Kent's ride on Real Quiet gave him every chance to win. If he had have held Real Quiet to the field who knows if he would have had a big enough sprint? Victory gallop was 10 lengths behind - many many races have been 'stolen' by the ride taking iniative and going for home and creating a space when he has horse. You have to also consider that if you watch closely, Victory gallop had to shift twice in the stretch. I say TOO GOOD!!.

I have different opinion on this..say Kent held Real Quiet back a bit, let Victory Gallop get closer and gets out kicked to the wire by a better closer he would have been grilled for not taking a big lead while he had horse, Ive always been of the opinion that bottoming out the field sometimes is the way to go, we'll never know, but I still don't think it was totally the wrong thing to do.

I have been critical of Kent on here but I do want to say he did a great job on Big Brown this year in all three races. What happened today with BB was incredible but Kent made the right decision pulling him up to risk any kind of injury. It will be interesting to see what they kind but Dutrow will never hear the end of this one that his horses run well because of Winstrol and not talent. I think barring an injury he has no choice but to run BB again in Breeders and perhaps as 4 year old.

It was noteworthy that going into the race it had been 25 years since Citation won the triple crown in 1948, and the anticipation of MAYBE Secretariate could finally do it. Had he won with a time of about 2:26 and by 3 or 4 lengths, he would have been celebrated as another great triple crown winner, but winning the way he did...he became a horse for the ages. This was a performance unequalled in any other sport. He had me wondering "why did the others show up"? Truly a wonder of God.

He didn't acc every 1/4 of the Belmont. That was the KD. Also, the time of 2;24 still IS a WR for any horse on a dirt track at 1.5 miles. Turf is naturally faster, and the then-WR for 1.5 on turf was 2;23&3, set by Kelso in the '64UNHcp. That turf WR is now held by Hawkster at 2;22&4, which he set in the '89 Oak Tree Inv, ironically only 10 days after the big guy died. What's amazing is that, 2 this day, the 2nd fastest time EVER on dirt at 1.5 miles is 2:25&4, 9-10L slower than 2;24!

Their time at the 6f post was 1:09 4/5. Most horses who run like are out of gas by the mile and drop dead by the finish. And yes, Big Red II set the then-world record for 12f at 2:24. Still, that makes the last 6f 1:14 1/5 - something to consider even though he accelerated every 1/4 mile.

It's okay to debate greatness, isn't it:) In respect to the "Big Red" title - I've always argued there are only 3 horses that can 'legally' be referred to as "Big Red": Man O' War, Phar Lap and Secretariat... all other racehorses don't qualify for the honorable title. This 3 had amazing charisma, power and ability, which sets them apart:)

I politely disagree (response to ahughes798 1 month ago). Laminitis has many causes most poorly understood. Probably the laminitis was the result of one or more of the many underlying diseases sometimes found in older horses. Secretariat was 19 in 1989 & considered old at that time. Cushing's disease, Insulin resistance or even hypothyroidism are possible. Obesity is a symptom found in all three. By itself, it does not cause the disease, merely alerts you to a possible underlying ailment.

I think what happened at the 6 furlong mark in this race was more amazing than Sec.'s burst of speed in the Preakness. It was obvious by Sham's subsequent fade, and the 10 length lead they held on the others, that the leaders were sprinting this 1.5 mile race! Can someone confirm if they were at course record here! Yet Sec. only seemed to improve. How was this possible? I don't know, but I saw it on TV and we have the video :-)

I've seen this video a hundred times or more and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes for reasons I can't fully explain. The emotion, the awe, the sound of the announcer's voice becoming awe-struck as he pulls away on the back stretch...."he is moving like a TREMENDOUS machine....but Secretariat is alOOOONE.....there in the stretch, Secretariat has opened a 22 length lead...he is going to be Triple Crown Winner!" I can think of no other sporting event that provokes such powerful emotions.

I want to apologize to all those that have read my comments here. Looking at them now, they seem like bragging, and that was not the point. That day (and event) was just one of those gems that life gives you. Not the money, but the reactions from friends is what I am talking about. As I said it took a long time. I really did not want to say why, I am not trying to brag, just diggin the memories. If you would like I'll tell ya. The same 'trick' also singled the first half of an $1800 double at Santa Anita in 2006. Do you really know how to tell if a horse wants more distance? That is the 'trick'. I did put Sarava with most every other horse (For the exacta: Sarava with all minus Artax Too boxed. They were all great overlays, and Artax Too would have been a waste of $20).

This is crazy!! Sarava is actually my dad's horse. He ran in england and was awful but was bred to run on dirt so my dad sent him over to the US. I didn't think he stood a chance because he's so small and was such an underdog. He ran again in another Grade 1 and came 4th but has been plagued by injuries (he almost died) so he's been happily retired to stud. Thank you for putting this up so i can relive it again. It is a fantastic memory of my brave little horse!

With one prediction down, I made another as I signed the IRS form, this horse (Sarava) will never win again. Unfortunate that I was correct on that one. I loved the guy!!! Thanks for putting this up. The stumble at the start didn't help his chances, but that's not why War Emblem lost the race. He quickly straightened himself out by bumping into Magic Weisner and got himself into a perfect stalking position. The real reason War Emblem lost was because he could not settle in the backstretch, and instead expended all his energy fighting the jockey.

By the way if you boxed the field in any number of exotics you profited a minimum 10% on the shortest odds with big brown out of the money......9x8=72x2=144 6-4 paid $659-144=$515-ROI on a $2 exacta wheel minus big brown. dude fuckin watch all of big browns previous races. He wins them all by atleast 10 lengths. Something was wrong this day whether it was a preparation mistake or the thing on its hooves came loose and jammed into his foot everytime he took a stride. Undefeatedbefore this race he would be able to take any horse anytime anywhere in a clean race.

Well that's just horse racing. Not Big Browns day that's all. Problems arise in races, it's really nobody's fault much of the time. That's why there is never a good reason to bet a horse into oblivion, even the triple crown. At even money I probably would have bet Big Brown but as it was, I just watched this one. And wasn't a bit surprised the race was a gate to wire job by a 38-1 shot. That's racing. He was a great site on the track though. Sure put 'em away in the Derby.

I respectfully disagree with your asessment that Kent let him run too hard. He was on a very rank horse the first 3/8 or so. He was fighting the jockey,he had his head up,his mouth open,and he damn near ran into the heels of the horses in front of him. Kent had his feet in the dashboard,as the old saying goes. He did a good job of actually getting him to relax by the time they entered the backstretch. He was doing everything possible to slow him down.The horse was rank,no more no less.

I thought quite the opposite. Big brown was actually under a tight hold around the first turn. He never ran hard early in the race. He resisted Desormeaux's hold, which might have tired him; also, Kent said that the track was very dry and hard to get a hold off. that may have been a factor in Big brown's loss.

I grew up in horse racing and I've watched horse races all my life. From the horse's behavior, the crack was not likely to have been bothering him. I think the issue is that the jockey let the horse run too hard in the beginning of the race and didn't make him hold back. I also think that pulling him back in the home stretch was fear brought on by the psycho PETA people. I think you might see this more often in the future from jockeys that know their horse isn't going to do well in the race.

First off, the 1/4 crack had not been repaired when they worked the horse on Tuesday, so no they would not have noticed the problem. The crack does not cause the pain for the horse, it is the build up of puss(from the abscess) under the hoof that causes the pain. Think about it like a bad blister on your foot, you can walk fine, you can jog fine, but if pushed to the limit, you are just not going to have it....Also, I would not put too much faith in the words coming out of Dutrow's mouth....

Yea, but I don't see how she injured herself I mean for godsakes she was 4 wide going for home totally in the clear... No interference with curlin, It's just weird how she came up lame back at the barn... I think she could of clipped heals with curlin I guess I need to watch the stretch run again..
