My sister had this on a 45rpm record way back in the early 1950s. I was five or six and sneaked into her collection and played this song over and over. My first exposure to the world of music. This song has been my favorite, ever since we lived in Wiesbaden, Germany in the early 60s (my father was stationed there), and they always played this at the Taunus Theatre (the American movie theatre) while we were waiting for the feature to start. The song was popular before I was even born (which is saying something!), but I love it as much as my favorites from the 50's, 60's 70's, 80's, 90's and today!! Another great one is "I Can't Get Started" by Bunny Berigan from that era.

Remember 10/3/51, and Ralph Branca and Bobby Thomson, and the "shot heard round the world" I was one of the few Giant fans living in Brooklyn back then, and that was one of the few days we could celebrate. BTW, I loved going to Ebbets Field.

Grateful for the tremendous voice of Jo Stafford. Her death is a great loss. The movie "De-Lovely" (about Cole Porter) has Sheryl Crow singing Begin the Beguine. It completely lacks the great melodic power of Jo. Here is vocal is to me one of the few better whose version is beter than Artie Shaw's instrumental instrumental recording. That is a real compliment. There is an excellent obituary of Jo in Time, Aug. 4. Will miss the great Jo Stafford, but thanks to You Tube she still lives!

When I was a child I loved her voice -- a beautiful, easy, relaxed, slighly smoky voice with very little inflection, it let you hear the song without commenting on it; and she was always in the sweet spot, the pitch was so perfectly placed, it shone like the moon. You knew where you were with her.

Es un clásico y las 3 juntas tenían la elegancia, la presencia y por supuesto las voces perfectas para arropar a Julio como nadie. Las he echado mucho de menos en sus posteriores giras. Eleanor's style was different because she tapped like a man and had acrobatics with it. Vera could not outtap Ann. She was more of a ballet dancer, a great ballet dancer who was also a GOOD tap dancer but not better than Ann at hoofing.

I disagree with her outperforming Fred. The women that upstaged Fred when he danced with them were Judy Garland and Cyd Charrisse, and not because they were technically better dancers but because of stage presence. Ginger Rodgers for some reason would disappear and you would always notice Fred when they danced together.

You can't see it so well on a small screen, but around 5:23, as F and E go into that last set of gorgeous turns, they both start grinning like mad! I can only imagine that they were both enormously relieved to have gotten through that number. And what a number - superb music, a fantastical set, beautiful costumes, tremendous choreography, AND the two people in the world who could pull it off with unrivaled grace and energy. Frank was right - we'll never see the likes of this again.

Like all of you, this performance makes my heart glad. Makes me wish for the late forties and early fifties when life, at least on the surface, was so simple and decent respectful. When I first saw this clip, I was blown away by the talent of Elanor Powell. What a stunningly beautiful woman, and what talent. This past spring I purchased the movie, Broadway Musical of 1940, off the internet. Now I can watch those two on a 50" LCD. No high def, but who needs it when look ing at them.

I listened to the Joe Stafford version as some of the Jazz purists recommend, sorry but I like this arrangement better. Beautiful lyrics and singing, I have had to wipe tears from my eyes on many occasions after listening to this beautiful rendition of a Cole Porter classic.

I love this song by Johnny. I got curious about the term beguine so I looked it up. It's a Latin dance similar to the rumba. It's slow and the dance moves are deliberate and smooth. The dance emphasizes the ability to roll the hips while stepping and is based on the Caribbean or Latin Ballroom dance bolero. Dances of this type were popular back in the Big Band era of the 1940's. I like the orchestra in the background, Johnny always has a great orchestra backing him.
