I've been following the good Capt' since the late 60's when I first stumbled across his album, "Trout Mask Replica." Unless you are used to music from the other side of the fence, I suggest you start with "Safe as Milk."

Many comments seem to imply that folk just claim to like it TMR. Well I'm not shitting or trying anything on when I say I truly enjoy TRM. In fact I love it. I like a lot of Beefheart, but TRM is the real deal - the rest doesn't measure up. I'm a big Zappa fan too but that's a different thing entirely. I also agree with an earlier comment - at this stage I can't even tell what's supposed to be so weird/inaccessible about TRM. One of the greatest fucking Rock N' Roll albums in existence.

I love Beefheart but i totally agree with some of the people here i dont like TMR simply because its un-listenable, i can't sit there and listen to TMR and enjoy it as i can with safe as milk etc, i do agree it is avant-garde but i'm not a fan of it at all. Hi Jack I own every official Beefheart record and quite a few (commercialized) bootlegs. I listened many times to all of them and I can only agree with you. TMR is so inaccessible that even for a big fan of his music it is difficult to honestly like it. You can be bewildered by the raw power and musical extravagance of the album, but sincerely being fulfilled with it, I doubt. To me there are four masterpieces: Safe as milk, Clear spot, Shiny beast and the original tapes of Strictly Personal.

From what I understand, this vocal style was typical at the end of his career - if you look at some older videos on here, such as "I'm Gonna Booglarize You" or "Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do" (both live), you can hear the vocals he's famous for. I do love the way he sounds here, though; I love voices that don't have conventional beauty but have power and character (Dylan and Tom Waits are other great ones).

I think it's kind of hard to know whether the weirdness in this advertisement actually had some symbolism or meaning, or whether the Captain just orchestrated it to be weird and freak people out. I think that can be asked of all of Captain Beefheart's work from Trout Mask Replica onwards. In any case, the man is a genius, albeit a cryptic, enigmatic and underappreciated one.

I knew the drummer here, Louis, in the early 90's. He was telling me about his days in a rock band, and said that one time they had gone on tour backing a weird guy called Captain Beefheart. I thought he was joking, and somehow knew that I was a big Beefheart fan. Only last year, I saw footage of the 'tragic band', and recognized Louis. I remember thinking it was strange that Louis had played with CB, yet had no real sense of who he was, or the stature of his music. Now it makes sense.

Easy, pal. There are plenty of us freaks out there. I've taken plenty more than 500 mikes in one sitting...as you know, these are the defining moments of your life. Nothing can compare. When I used to do that, I'd never heard of Captain Beefheart. In fact, I've just really discovered him kinda recently. Now I have everything I could get my hands on. He's absolutely fantastic. I first heard-and loved-this aged 17 in 1973. Orange Claw Hammer is deeply moving storytelling in the folk tradition, but told in a modern way by a madman touched with genius, which is what the Captain was. Some of the stuff on Trout Mask was simply weird, the sort of clang associations you get with schizophrenia or drugs. Like Dylan, Don Van Vliet had the gift of occasionally expressing a wonderful insight in a way that chimed with the emotions of some, but not all,listeners. That's OK.

I don't think there are any tabs of this, since this was recorded live from a show they once did on the radio. There are only two bootleg records that includes this version. The first one is the very very very rare An Evening with Zappa and Beefheart [they also play a lot of unknown songs and some stuff from history and improvisations of the mothers of invention.] On the other hand you could go and search on ebay for a copy of the Grow Fins: Rarities 1965-1982 5CD-box :)

Ok...don't be confused...The original ALBUM "Safe As Milk" (1967) did NOT have a track on it called "Safe As Milk". However, Beefheart's 2nd album "Strictly Personal" (1968) DID, and that is this version. Any alternative versions you may hear, including that on the re-released ALBUM "Safe As Milk" were recorded circa 1968 but not released until recently. Got it?
