Just my opinion, for what it's worth. I find Carter to be the best drummer I've ever heard. He plays technically great, but more importantly he plays drums to compliment the music, and he never messes up (that I've seen, and I've seen them live many times). Carter is a living musical metronome bridging the gap between a drum machine and pure heart with genious grooves!. Jam away Carter JAM AWAY!!

Drumming at it's best is Brian Blade. Carter's sick tho. Better than anyone in rock/pop/hard rock and right up there with other top jazz drummers. If you like Carter, Blade's work will blow your mind. His time and dynamics are unmatched. Not a lot of straight solo's but you will find him on here with Joshua Redman and Patitucci and other of the top jazz artists of today's genre.

gmcjetpilot, you are wrong abotu Carter. He does everything else with his right hand. But, he decided to drum open faced lefty to be able to reach the rest of his toms/cymbals with his right hand. I also play both like this and with my right hand dominate. It really helps.

What I like about Carter and why I think he is so popular is because he is groovy and can make the beat be felt across not just other skilled drummers, but across other musicians and just members of an audience. I think this is important. Very skilled drummers like Tony Royster Jr. and Jojo Mayer are good and worshiped in the drummer world, but as far as making them an addition to a jam band, I would rather take Beauford any day. All very skilled players!

I agree with the 3:10 poster. Carter is a master of amazing subtlety, but alot of it were his sticks. It's not hard for any intermediate drummer to achieve that sound, but the feel is all Beauford.

Well if you break down what he's doing around 3:20, its a stick click or rim shot rhythm. its quite easy with practice, i have students that are only 13 doing rim shot rhythms like that. and as for the other odds and ends that he throws in, they are just simple drum rudiments played on different equipment on his kit. it's hard for me to find anyone that can match the all-out ferocity of gene hoglan, especially when it comes to double-bass kinda stuff. but i like a lot of things for a lot of different reasons. for instance, carter's playing is very good, but he does not use the whole drum. he plays fairly light on the heads, buddy rich taught us that really pounding it, with no dampening, creates a whole other kind of drum sound, and it's beautiful. but whatever, i'm a bassist first and foremost.

He is really good. Other really amazing drummers are Tony Royster Jr., Marco Minnemann and Zach Hill. Tony Royster is my favorite drummer. Marco Minnemann is a robot (no kidding) and Zach Hill is a monster (best single bass pedal work ever, just insane shit. Too bad the band he plays in sucks)

He plays with musicality and speed, power, precision and ease it pissies me OFF! ha-ha ( I am a drummer ) but I question it when I hear really versatile musician's play. At the time this was recorded, he used Zildjian 13" K/Z Hats, but reveresed them. The Z Dyno Beat is the top hat and the K is the bottom. Usually they are meant to be played the other way around.

it is pretty terrible. but then again it was a good effort. just need to work on his groove cuz it was kinda messy..and totally changed the whole feel to the song. he overplayed a lot of parts which made it really horrible.

He is grooving all over the place and you have no clue. You wouldn't know a groove if it bit your ass. Not one plays like Carter, but to even emulate it is really quite nice.
