Don't 4get my peeps that breaking came out in da mid 70's & was greatly influenced by fabolous pioneer b-boys like JOJO then Trac just to mention a few,then the breaking began to blossom again in the early 80's where Afrika Bambaata & Rock Steady Crew & Rock City Crew & of course other great breaking crews in New York City brought out their best from influences from JOJO & Trac...you really got to give props to anyone who participated and still represents a part of the HIP HOP culture!!!

I remember this day, I had so much fun and I always loved Rock Steady Crew for originality and also many were my friends too. NYC breakers were good but my choice will always be RSC. RSC were not into hating but many people hated on RSC because RSC were very good breakers and busted out original & fly moves...my love to all b-boys around the world & mad props to Afrika Bambaata & RSC & all the b-boys all over NYC who made breaking and the hip hop culture real at this time.

I don't mind mentioning my age but I remember all this because it was MY TIME. I'm 37 now and I remember when the cops did chase us and people used to think we were fighting. In actuality those were some of the most peaceful times on the streets. We "battled" but without guns and violence. As soon as it faded and snobs pushed it out the streets got worse. Now this isn't to say Breakin' was a solution but for some like me it sure did help make the streets a little less cold. I miss this time.

Maybe because it is a Hollywood backed movie and it was trying to capitalize on a potential cultural trend, for no better expression, so it may have been strictly bottom line: get the movie done and nothing else outside of the contract, does that make sense? In essence, anything that was cut from the movie, tragically, if not saved was/is destroyed.

Man, I remember when I was in the 4rd grade back in 1984 when me and all my friends went $2 Tuesdays nights at the local theatre in Mississippi to see this. I was in a break dance group called the Camalot Kids. We would rehearse our moves all week and then we would go to the dance at the Auditiorium on Friday nights and battle just like they did. But it was all about having fun and talking to girls. Not about all the BS that they kids are into now. THE GREATIES 80's. You had to be there.

To follow-up, I would also like to add that this song is pure poetry from start to finish and deeply philosophical. Whether a fan of hip-hop or not, I think Grandmaster Flash is not needed to be an acuired taste: they are a special flavor guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of the avid/focused music listener. Chuck D (of Public Enemy) noted Grandmaster Flash as a significant influence, and that is clearly visible here (he would eventually take the street commentary to a grittier level).

'Beat Street' is definitely one of the finest by Grandmaster Flash. The lyrics are just soaring with thought-provoking questions about our society (and humanity itself). To me, it's moments like this that reinforces the lasting appeal and relevance of Hip-Hop. The 80s may be long gone but the commentary on war & poverty is much alive and (unfortunately) flourishing. Maybe it's cleverly crafted music like this, with real heart and passion, that can bring people together united as one. A+!
