A poser claiming to love Bauhaus is 10 times better that a poser claiming to love MM for two reasons: 1. They are actually a Goth band. 2. Its better then MM. Its also actually fun to test posers on their knowledge of actuall Goth bands. Just fire a few names at them and ask if he likes it. If he lies, ask him what album or song he likes best. It shuts them up every time and its fun. Just keep telling people what real Goth is, it keeps our subculture alive through the next couple of years.

Kult you are so right. I say that we need to just give up, and stop telling people that this is "Goth" in any way. we just start labeling all these old bands Darkwave. Just let people think that MM, Metal, or whatever else they think is goth. After all, the "Poseurs" outnumber us by about a 30 to 1 ratio.Besides, if we tell poseurs, that this kind of band is goth, suddenly we end up with tons of people that claim to like them, because they are "Oh so goth." Fuck "Goth" I like darkwave!

the bauhaus did not do the song "cry little sister", it was done by gerard mcmahon, and you either like the bauhaus or you don't. either way, these men defined a genre and have impacted our generation in ways some of us will never know. i saw them live with nine inch nails, something i never thought i would see, and was repulsed that they were basically the opening act.

They probably got lumped into the "punk" label. A lot of those bands (like Siouxsie) changed their style after they felt that the whole punk thing became too commercial, and they found a way to label that, too. There isn't any goth music.

Bauhaus is considered a seminal Goth rock band, and there were other "goth" bands in the 80s too such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Can Dance etc. But was the label goth rock/music around in the 80s? I thought the whole goth subculture was invented in the 90s. So if there was no goth music term in the 80s, what genre were they considered to be then?

I guess I wasn't clear about it. I meant that it looked like it wouldn't be incredibly hard for someone who is already proficient at playing guitar. I know that if I tried it, I wouldn't be able to play it, because I don't play guitar, so me trying it and posting a comment like, "Oh my god, it's so impossible to play!" wouldn't be at all helpful. I was watching "The Hunger" which is basically a vampire movie and it has david bowie in it and others, and bauhaus sings bela lugosi's dead in the opening sequence.. and I thought it was awesome. :) and it was right after I started to like bela lugosi and ed wood and stuff. Good times... this is the first song which had me intrigued in delay/echo efx. David Gilmour, Andy Summers and U2's Edge may have popularize the device but here, guitarist Daniel Ash managed to use this to eerie, creepy effect (pun intended). I believe it was going for minimalism, mostly as a reaction to the elaborate music of bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, whom Punks and New Wavers were reacting to and against. I like both kinds of music myself, but will not tell you to not think this is boring. This song is regarded by many to be the begining of what we now call, Goth.
