You're insane if you think Nigel Kennedy plays ANYTHING better than William Primrose. I have never listened to Lawrence Power though, so if his interpretation really is great, then you should post it. I heard some short samples of him playing it, and I didn't really like what I heard (he had a slow vibrato and somewhat of a generic sound), but it wasn't enough for me to make an accurate judgment, so you should definitely post it.

Good man. I'm only listening for the first time, but this concerto is fantastic. Also, I'm sorry, but I found Primrose's Walton pretty awful. Have a look at Lawrence Power (which also has the only recording of the fantastic Rubbra concerto) or Nigel Kennedy.

He's a fine musician, no doubt, but a very unidiomatic performance. He makes it sound like gushy late-romantic sentimentality. Worse than that, there's not any ornamentation, florid or otherwise. Pity that late-baroque and early-classical music gets this sort of treatment.

I played the Benda! Nobody seemed to have heard of it in the US, but my teacher was Russian, so maybe that's why I played it. Anyways, I'm glad to see a recording of it.

this is one of my favourite viola pieces. although not technically difficult in comparison to other great works like the Walton or the Bartok concertos, it is absolutely beautiful when played well, and this video is solid proof of that. if you ever get a chance to perform it in a church like i did, dont hesitate, it truly is haunting.

Bashmet is considered one of if not the most respected violist in the world(per NY TIMES). His viola is a testore from the 1700's--and it has a gorgeous sound. His excellent interpretation, though a bit fast for me, seems to merit the viola with more brilliance than can usually be attributed to it from the normal viola repetoire

Vengerov is a virtuoso, no question. He excells in the virtuoso repertoire, Ysaye, Tchaikovsky etc. He is a talented virtuoso. Bach was more than just a virtuoso, a term which can sometimes mean empty technical wizardry. Someone can be a virtuso and not be a profound interperter. Talent inspires with imagination and the technique serves the music.

I played this piece 5 years ago in a small competitíon, and in my music school exam... and at my grandmothers funeral... Watching and listening to this brings lots of memories.. I like Hindemiths music in general, havent played his sonata yet, but Meditation and as I wrote, Trauermusik years ago...

Dude, Bashimet is like my new hero! But, God i get so frustrated with the fancy camera work. It's awesome how the orchestra follows the Bashimet and Vengerov without a conductor, but the camera didn't once focus on the concert master. I was hoping to see more communication between Bashimet, Vengerov and the concertmaster but the camera kept focusing elsewhere.

one of the best violinist team up with the best Violist.... I found that Bashment almost never perform from memory?? anyone notice it? I was there at his premier recital in USA some 20 years ago at New England Conservatory (boston), he played the whole recital with music. He did that for almost all his performance including those with major orchestra. As great as him, does he has problems remembering scores??

In a way the camera work echoes the communicative ambient onstage - two soloists rather than a dialogue. I love at 3.25 - Vengerov finishes his passage rather brilliantly and flashes a glance at Bashmet, it seems to me expecting some kind of smile, or spirit of fun, but gets a stern face from Bashmet - Vengerov does an almost imperceptible double take, as he checks to make sure ! Bashmet doesn't look like a lot of fun to work with, and the result is a little like two cockerals in competition.

Wow - that's SO interesting! Vengerov's playing style actually makes Bashmet's style sound introverted! A real shame the cameraman couldn't just film from the front and capture more of the interaction between the two though. One of the chief beauties of this piece is the way the two soloists have to communicate and mirror each other's phrasing during the performance. I've heard that aspect balanced much more thrillingly than this, but this is lovely nonetheless.

I would also like to amend my post a little: I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this. Bashmet is god. =]

the person playing directs :) it happens quite often, although it is usually done with smaller orchestras for pieces such as mozart, beethoven etc. it is in many ways probably better this way as it forces the orchestra to actually listen to, pay attention to, and follow the soloist, and gives him the chance to impress his, how to say, musical ideas up the orchestra without the influence of the conductor.

are you kidding me? Reger emulated Mozart and his style. Definitely not the sounds, though. But if you rewrote some passages he wrote, especially in Op. 77b, etc. and rewrote them in a major key it would sound totally mozartian.

thx for keeping me update about mozart's unfinished work for Violin, viola and cello. Wonder if there's any way to see the score even it is incomplete?? Bashment is amazing. I was there when he played his first recital in united states. I was a student at New England Conservatory and he played his first recital at our school. Wow This is bad. Bashmet doesn't play loud enough, and he's weird at conducting. The song is 13 minutes long. Either it's severely edited, or they just cut out a lot of stuff durring the preformance. Watch the Issac Stern and Pinchas Zukerman version. That's the way it's supposed to be.

i love bashmet's playing and i like vengerov's too, but bashmet conducting just looked rediculous, especially since he conducted with him bow. Also, watching Bashmet stare at the music , it was like he was sightreading. finally, having focus on vengerov staring at bashmet just feaked the shit outa me

To my taste this performance is rushed and seems under-rehearsed.Vengerov's facial gymnastics seem self-regarding, cloying and ultimately distracting from the music. 4:30 is a perfect example. He looks like he just came in his pants. Who knows, maybe he did.

I wonder if it's possbile for Bashemet to not conduct. I mean,....come on. It looks pretty bad. How much spot light and recognition does want. Vengerov does an awesome job. So does Bashmet. I would have kept things in the same era as it was written, than making it so romantic. And wow does Bashmet ALWAYS decide to change the tempo here.

Okay, first things first. Wozzeck is NOT dodecaphonic; it is atonal. Second, I don't like the fact that it gets a little repetetive in places. Some spots it's just the same stuff over and over again, and it sort of kills the value of that section. Now, I will give it credit; as a whole, the work is interesting to listen to (especially that orchestration *shivers*), but it would be better if some segments weren't repeated so damn often. So there. Got it?

It's an interesting instrumentation, to be sure. Musically, it's not that great, but it's still quite good. Of course, nobody likes this kind of contemporary, so it's understandeable why they just clapped. You know the rest.

I agree. I dont think its meant to be a concerto, and I have always had trouble hearing violas in concertos. I think this is really good, I agree that some of the tone colour of the clarinet is lost, and that a lot of the original nuances have been lost...its not meant to be a clarinet concerto against an orchestra, but an ensemble where every part is to be played with individuality. That's lost here, but I still think Yuri's playing is very nice and the arrangement is good effort!

It's not that I don't like viola or Bashmet's playing. (In fact I am an amateur clarinetist who has a friend who's really good at viola) I do look favorably on the sound and the tone of the viola. It's just that some pieces sound most beautiful as the original orchestration.

Also, Bashmet made a mistake when he arranged this for Viola and string orchestra. The Weber Clarinet Quintet is usually arranged for clarinet and string orchestra, but the Brahms and the Mozart quintets are not. It is because they sound most beautiful as the original organization.

people should understand that when Brahms wrote this quintet, he wrote it for his friend clarinetist Richard Mulfeld. His playing was so brilliant that his playing of the Brahms sonatas, quintet, and trio brought about the clarinet fad in many nations, notably Britain. Leopold Wlach, the former principal of the Vienna Philharmonic, has a very excellent recording of this piece.

Fantastic performance. Bashmet has such a unique sound compared to the other greats. It's so round and less piercing. I think they could have used a more "chamber-size" orchestra. There are times where he is a bit too covered.
