Baryshnikov is certainly an icon. You might want to check out some other dancers from his time whose fame was eclipsed by Misha: the late Fernando Bujones, Peter Martins and Ivan Nagy. All worth watching. But none had the rock-star quality of Baryshnikov.

Hello ziggystardust759, I own this performance of "Giselle"~it is available on vhs entitled "Live From Lincoln Center"...I don't think it's still available brand new but I'm sure with patience you will find one in good condition on ebay or Amazon. Hope this helps!

I have found that while watching Misha dance, I can't breathe... it is as though he leaps with my breath, and sends it soaring into the heavens... I think that there is no other artist, in no other art form, be it music, dance, painting, or theater, that more profoundly embodies the sheer spirit and soul of it than Baryshnikov. Bravo.

If you're implying there's a strong femininity, that would make sense, but I don't think you're capable of thinking that expansively. I completely agree with you. However, please don't confuse a role that's stylistically inappropriate for one dancer, for a lack of technique. Nureyev was a tremendously talented artist; one of the greatest dancers of our time, and he virtually opened the door for male dancers to be what they are today. Personally, I think Misha is pure perfection in this role (among most others) and it's the closest we've seen to Nijinsky. I love the fact that they're both so different in almost every way.

The name of the ballet is "Le Spectre de la Rose." It was first performed in 1911; the choreographer is Michel Fokine and the music is composed by Carl von Weber. Although many of the great dancers of the 20th century have performed "Le Spectre" (Nureyev, Baryshnikov, etc.), this very short ballet was made famous by the man who first performed the role, Vaslav Nijinsky. Nijinsky is a fascinating character; after becoming the greatest dancer in the world, mental illness cut his career short.

He was vain and little else. He would have been great if he had more control and better jumps! He seemed far to self aware and not in good way. I understnd to you and many others he seems amazing. Completely agree with those who consider Legris and Nureyev better. I love Misha and yes he is a ballet genius. His jumps are effortless, but I don't see him suitable for the style. IMHO he doesn't succeed in performing the role convincingly. Legris is the best though without the high jumps. Agreed.

Baryshnikov is an exceptional dancer, but I would not say that "Nureyev is not in Misha's league", it is not true at all. Nureyev was in a way a different type of a dancer, closer to Nijinsky than Baryshnikov, and in some areas Nureyev was ahead of Baryshnikov. Nureyev had a historic impact in the world of ballet that is transcendental, which we can't say about Baryshnikov. Nureyev was a phenomenon in the world of male dancer that it is still unequaled and of course unsurpassed.

I love how he tries to find the right perfect words to define things, people, etc. He is so respectful with every kind of dance (which is not that usual in a classical formation dancer!). He seems to be very humble and very conscious of how lucky he has been being born with this natural talent and bing able to learn from such important/special teachers. He knows he was a good instrument for dance, but he also seems to be aware that he wouldn't have reached the top without such special teachers.

I do nto understand why when Ilok at the more modern peices that were done for hime there was not more range. He was the perfect instrument of dance. I wish I had such a dancer to choreograph for. He was the absolute best at his peek and is still very valid and interesting. Nurejev is not quite in Misha's league! He was far sloppier. He did not have the perfection in him. Misha is right. Just look at the two of them dance Giselle. Misha's is the standard!

You know... a great interview with a sincere Baryshnikov who's full of praise for Nurejev, but for me he's the greater dancer. Both did influence dance in our time, making male dancers as important as females. And they inspired many a choreographer. By doing so great ballets were created.

This is my absolutely favorite Nutcracker. It's a shame they don't show it on Christmas Eve anymore on PBS. I always looked forward to it every year. One of the truly wonderful things about Gelsey Kirkland (like Alessandra Ferri) is that she didn't just dance through her roles, she acted them as as well. And I love the fact that you never heard her pointe shoes keplunking on the ground like horseshoes. I wish there were more videos of her on here, especially later in her career.

I guess the difference between Baryshnikov and Nureyev is that the first shows us the speed, the precision of the ultimate masculinity in dance, being at the same time so delicate. The second is the complex beauty and the sublety of androginity in it. It´s a question of language of each artist, reflecting their own personalities, both so magical, so mesmerizing.

taglioni was the principal of la sylphyde, this is LES sylphides, a completely different and much later ballet, by another choreographer altogether (in russia, btw, they refer to this ballet as "chopiniana" as the score is by chopin, and not written for an orchestra originally, but rather for the pianoforte. have a nice day!

I'm not sure about this particular ballet but for the most part, the original choreography isn't used. However the romantic style is still used. Eg. the focus is on the lower leg, there aren't any major lifts or turning. The partnering was more about supporting the woman in her promenades, balances etc. This is because as you mentioned the pointe shoes were much softer, which decreased the ballet vocabulary. No this wasn't the first ballet en pointe, that was La Sylphide.

i think this is the best version of sylphiedes ever. she really brings out the ghosty, light, slender and gracious aspect. and Baryshnikov fits her perfectly, because he is just as light and graciuos as her. PERFECT :D. and i can't find it anywhere on dvd oder video :(

I dance for myself now but I dance hard. I rent a studio a few days per moths and dance all day. It is where I find my freeist moments. Seeing him dance in person reinforced my idea of what dancing was about. Thank you for posting this! A great teacher is truly pricelss and can make all the difference. That is wht I loved about my fist teacher was the preperation ofr the dancing. We sent 6 months just working our hands and transitioning from the basci prositions and stretching and the mental and phyiscal together. I loved the discipline and beauty. I danced about 10 hours per week back then. I broke my foot at the age of 12 ....

Thank you for posting this small clip: it is insightful, and allows a glimpse into the mysterious world of Misha's learning with Pushkin. I love the idea of Pushkin watching Misha, not necessarily interested in watching him dance, but just watching him. It's a shame the video cuts out just as Misha is about to take to the air.

I love Misha. I saw him for the first time when I was only 7 and had been dancing since I was 3 3 or 4 times per week. @-3 hours per class. He ecghoed everything that I knew dance could be. I had something veryheavy fall on my large toe on right foot when I was 12 . One year after I wen to on point and I could not dance on point anymore...but I can still dance like the wind til this day Modern,jazz,even tap). MISHA is truly an inspiration. He is so wonderful to watch. I think he is the best!!

Yes, and professionals these days would be much better if teachers of people like you would explain a litle bit of the history of ballet. This People as you call them, are Milhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland, two of the greatest ballet dancers of all the time.She is not supossed good, She is A GREAT dancer, despite her anorexia. If you only see anorexia in this vid...do something else, ballet is not for you.

I think Gelsey was genius. Her dancing was truly beautiful. She strove for a perfection that yielded some brilliant results. But, annorexia, bulemia and drugs robbed her of her strength. She dances beautifully here, but you can see her support is weak at times and she doesn't achieve the standard she herself had previously set. She admits all of this in her book and on the credit roll of the video. Still, Gelsey was a major artist, a true ballerina.

Try reading her autobiography, Dancing On My Grave. It will give you some understanding of the pressures she was under with Balanchine and Misha. She was obsessed with perfection and never felt she reached it. She never believed she was ever good enough or knew how wonderful she really was. Happily she turned her life around. Read her sequel, The Shape of Love for a happy ending to her career.

Actually, Gelsey's dancing was quite horrible here. She has no energy and you can really see it in her variation of this dance and her 'balance'. When she wasn't anorexic she was beautiful. In fact at the end of the DVD with this performance they put a quote from her where she talks about how embarassed she was by this and she was telling aspiring ballet dancers not to be anorexic and all that. Which made me happy..

You could not be more wrong. Kirkland's performance is extraordinary and perfectly matched to Baryshnikov. Drug addiction is a terrible curse and affliction, but artistic performances by addicts are not necessarily bad. I admire Kirkland's performance, but I would emulate Baryshnikov. There's no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
