Personally I think the violinist did a great job on all the dances save the third (with the harmonics). The harmonics could have been clearer, but otherwise I thought this performance was very moving.

If you mean by evil "good", as the English say "wicked", I agree. He was very evil. If you mean it in the literal sense, well no. He had very deep knowledge of other modes and and harmonies that may sound atonal too some, but believe me, he was tonal, a bit edgy, nevertheless tonal and still followed the classical pattern of composing. Check out his Romanian Folk Dances. They might be a little easier to digest. Cheers, Szx.

This is not classical music, which refers to an era ending with Beethoven, but this is powerful music that has yet to be understood by a wide audience. Bartok was very intense and bleak. One feels stalked by profound violence and disillusionment; as if aliens had landed in the forest, taken up stringed instruments and devised their own tonality.

Yeah ~ the 4th is just ........ waow etc..... It's great to see the first mvmt (at least a bit) here. No doubt extremely difficult to play... Bartok's music is ultrapowerful. He was also a great guy ~ he left his home country in protest at his govt siding with the n*z*s. For anyone who hasn't heard, chk out the violin&piano sonatas (there are 2), and the first two piano concertos, and perhpas the miraculous mandarin suite. These works are all just 'beyond great'... like much of Bartok's music :)

I know that there are a couple "real" recordings of Bartok playing violin sonatas with Joseph Szigeti, including his own violin sonata no. 2, because I have them right here in front of me. No, there are not only 1 or 2 recordings of Bartok playing at the piano. Just because you don't know about them doesn't mean they don't exist lol.

Hard to believe though, that bartok only ever made 1 or 2 recordings, as he lived until 1945 ! From 1925 on, in the age of electrical recordings, and modern remaster techniques it's not that hard to make, let's say a 1935 recording sound this good. This might be piano rolls, but some compilation cd's note "piano rolls" on some tracks, and "recorded" on others, guess he did both. One source says he recorded up to 1941, great sound then already! Ask any shellac collector ;-)

Bartok had a way with "painting" his music on staves. This wonderful performance is an oral and visual depiction of this unique man's music. Anyone who views this as "sloppy" needs to turn off the metronome and learn the concept of "flexible pulse"

Bartok was known to have gathered many traditional tunes and dances from different countries and based/inspired some of his dances on them. There's Hungarian, Bulgarian and Romanian (did I spell that right ?("sweating all over")) tunes in his oeuvre. Great to hear though that one who was crazy about traditional tunes could write such amazingly unique pieces as his second violin concerto ;-)

is it just me or is his shoulder very, very tense? Everything else about his technique is amazing! The rest of his body seems relaxed, but his shoulder is very elevated to compensate for a long neck but no shoulder rest. Shoulder rests basically help us violinists with longer necks hold the instrument while keeping our shoulder from raising unnecessarily

Thank you very much. Great interpretation. Simply the best violin Bartok I have ever heard, Sir Menuhin inclusive. :)Only one question-where are other 3 parts? And where I can hear your other recordings? I like your left hand, the way how your fingers are touching the string, not vertically. yeh, the shoulder rest actually makes certain bowing techniques much harder, when my teacher taught me how to hold the violin properly ie. without a shoulder rest, it felt perfectly normal and now, i would never resort to using that shoulder rest again !

Actually you can keep the violin up without a shoulder rest. I have very small hands but I play without a chin rest and shoulder rest. I also know tons of violinist who play without the shoulder rest regardless of the size of their hands.

yeah there's no way you can keep the violin up on its own without something... notice his hand is so enormous he can always keep is thumb under the neck even in those insanely high notes.

For those who are in the neighbourhood: you can watch him live at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on the 18th November next. As a member of the Fancy Fiddlers he will be playing in the concert to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Netherlands Music Instrument Fund. The Fiddlers will team up with established soloist like Paolo Giacometti and Colin Carr. The concert has no admission fee but a donation to the Fund will be much appreciated.

Many musicians struggle to have the first movement of these dances sound "romanian" not by any fault of theirs or lack of ability, but because of lack of knowledge/experience of what romanian music sounds like, - and bartok's influences. I'm very impressed by this interpretation overall- and Ive heard many versions. I encourage anyone who learns these pieces to get a feel for eastern european music in general to help the song sound more authentic and the way it was meant to be played :D

my school's orchestra played this last year. We only played a couple, including the first (Joc Cu Bata, I think it's called). This kid has the best interpretation of Bartok's work, compared to some of the older violinists on YouTube. Thanks for the upload.

It's not a matter of thinking, and I perfectly know that Bartok also wrote 2 Sonatas for violin and piano. But that doesn't mean that they belong in the same series in his compositions catalog. Your answer to nadyart "Number 3 solo sonata" means that this is the 3rd solo sonata, which isn't true, that's why i replied. Solo sonatas and sonatas for violin and piano are always considered different genres in classical music, and cataloged separately in every composer's list of composition.

No, what are you talking about?! Bartok only wrote 1 solo violin sonata and this is its first movement, there is no number. He finished it in march 1944, then wrote his third piano concerto, and then died.

The piano concerto is such a good format for a composer to tell their story outside a symphony, which does not necessarily allow any form of dominance from an instrument. And I love how each composer uses different devices to enhance certain key sounds. Prokofiev, for instance, tooting out the high notes on flutes to accompany high notes on the piano; the married sound becomung indivisible.
