Was für ein erbärmlicher Spinner! Er ist noch nicht mal annähernd so gut wie er denkt, dass er ist. Bachs Musik ist nicht dazu da, um sich eitel selbst darzustellen. Mal abgesehen davon, dass man erstmal Klavier üben sollte.

Not to take anything away from Barenboim - he is a great musician - but this performance somehow doesn't cut it for me. It lacks the clarity of form which could really make a performance of Goldberg special. But I guess everyone has their tastes. Just my two cents...

The assertive opening is refreshing after hearing so many sloshed, slow, lugubrious renderings. Remember the harpsichord. This perfomance utilizes the variable dynamics and articulations made possible on the piano while still approximating (without buffoonishly imitating) the harpsichord. And what delicate, intoxicating slow trills.

in my opinion, although it might not have been his worst is certainly does get very repetitive and is rather uninspiring. Compared to a masterpiece such as his La Valse the Bolero is not on the same level of musical complexity. So I can understand his bitterness regarding how famous this is.

The Berliner Phils are awesome! Wonderful to see such a crowd show up for a classical concert, we wish we'd command such a crowd here in Saint Louis, where we also have a world-class symphony... the only thing funny in this clip is Barenboim's way of conducting: he looks like a mechanical doll, wound up and ready to go... or in another way, it looked as if he was demonstrating how well he trained his musicians: "look, Ma, no hands!" LOL....

Perhaps Daniel is a paradox, with questionable 'morality' in his personal life but taking an admirable stance where the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is concerned. He does not proclaim himself perfect or a saint but at least he is honourable and concerned enough to speak out against the conflict which can only be resolved by mutual respect and reaching a compromise which does not involve violence and hatred. One has to respect him for that, his betrayal of Jacqueline du Pre is another story.

Bravo!! I think Barenboim is one of the greatest of Chopin interpreters!! BECAUSE--he plays Chopin at a steady tempo--and doesn't OVER DRAMATISE the music--Chopin Himself reportedly played his pieces at a steady tempo--and used Rubato sparingly--esp in his watzes and mazurkas

I think that he still makes it sound musical despite how fast he plays it. And as for the "showing off," you can see that there's an orchestra behind him, so my guess would be (though I can't be sure) that this was an encore piece after a concert that he was soloing in, so it makes sense that he would play it like that. Encore pieces are often fast and showy. But I don't think it really takes away too much from the expressiveness of it all.

The Berliner Philharmoniker are always a tad ahead of the conductor. Other European orchestras aren't - just the Berliner. It's always been like this, even back in the days of Furtwangler.

Good question Bus! What happens with great European conductors is that they tend to conduct on the UP-BEAT. That is, the actual beat is placed when his hands go UP. If you look carefully, look at the string players' bows. They are right on the beat. Evildictatovarn is partly right. However, major orchestras know the repertoire well enough to were they don't have to rehearse much, it is just adding minor details to make it different. The main reason for the "lag" is due to the conducting style.

It depends on the conductor and the orchestra. Sometimes its too expensive to pay the players to rehearse a lot so the conductor stays ahead of them and shows them thru his movements what he wants them to do. The symphony mainly depends on the concert master (the first violin) to lead them. They also have some that rehearse a lot and they go on the the conductors down beat because they know what he wants next already.

The Video does lag but the song itself has a rest on the downbeat of one, and a pickup note on beat 2 so its (8th note rest, 3 8th notes, half note)

Thank you dpxstsmfp. To make sure I understand how they play relative to the conductor's ... Do you move your violin's bow or hit the piano key in synch with the conductor's hand movement? Or do you purposedly move half a beat behind him because you need to know his instruction? I have never been to a concert this close-up. I like imagining myself as a conductor, and perfect synch between sight and sound on my monitor will make it more enjoyable. Again, thanks for the advice.

Its true that some videos lag, but not this one (you can tell because all the instruments are on cue). What your seeing is the fact that orchestra conductors conduct half a beat early.

esta obra es magnifica pero aun asi es indescriptible lo que esta dentro de esta obra maestra, su expresion, su sentimiento gran compositor español. Well, you know, I met Horowitz too, when he was travelling with the Barnum and Bailey circus in the 1970s. At that point in his careeer he couldn't find work playing classical piano, so he just played some light pop music between circus acts--Beatles medleys, Man of La Mancha, that sort of thing.

I met Horowitz myself in 1956. He actually played a piece on our upright piano. He was traveling with the Vienna Boys' Choir at the time. I personally really like Barenboim (his music), although I have never met him. I am sure if anyone has this ability, it is him. I love Richter's and Baremboim's playing. My music teacher always said that Horowitz was the greatest, and that was in the 1960s too.

I do appreciate Lang´s passion and talent, but let´s state clearly who is the Master and who is the student. Thank you for uploading this beautiful piece! Greetings to Dale Clevenger from Bratislava! I remember well his visit and a workshop at the Bratislava Music Academy in 2001. "I do not care about missing notes!", he sad several times to the students when they played for him, "in music, you have to take risks!" And I also remember a fantastic, moving concert of the Chicago Symphony under Barenboim at the Vienna Musikverein with Mahler 7th, just a few days after September 11.

Terzo: ti dirò che io vado matto per Angela Lear. Sai chi è? Non credo sia famosa quanto Arrau o Kissin, ma il suo è uno dei Chopin migliori mai sentiti in vita mia. To me, this interpretation moves inbetween Chopin's "imaginary Italy" and the earthbound existence Frederic was soon to escape from. I wouldn't hesitate to call this deliberate on both Barenboim's and Chopin's part. Genius.

To play beethoven you have to manipulate your feelings in such a way that you have to go from sorrow or melancholy, to ira desperation and then pum! come back to deep sorrow and its this fluctuation that makes Beethoven difficult to interpret with accuracy (you need to be a little crazy), and Baremboim does it, however to play Chopin you have to translate your self into sadness put all that into the play you have to feel the acute of a hurt heart.
