Baguazhang, xingyi and taijiquan can not be fused with modern wushu. These styles need no modification. They are pure. Cheng bagua is often called swimming bagua because Cheng Tinghua had a very illusive type of footwork with his shuajiao. This translates in his very famous version of bagua. Wushu people favor his because it is more asthetically appealing than Yin style. It flows more.

i'm not sure where the conversation turned to "bending" (and yes... i've seen the Avatar. a lot. haha) But since there's no subtitles, i thought i might try to fill in some of the blanks: towards the end, the master was talking about using your "heart" instead of your fists (or a sword). So it was basically relating internal w/ external arts. That's all... just thought it was pretty cool..

Thats a good question..lol To be honest in my opinion I think Wudang BaGua has a lot of modern WuShu influence. I could be wrong , but thats just my feelings on the matter. I like Yin style because its more to the point far combat, then most of the BaGua systems I've encounter.

I wish people would give the whole 'avatar' thing up. Its a cartoon for gods sake! Yes, it has actual kung fu in it, but why watch cartoons when you could be doing the real thing? Bagua is extremely vigorous with a lot of twisting and compressing that requires your body already be open and supple enough to handle it. Anything less and you`re injured. I seriously suggest building a foundation through some qi gong or tai chi before taking on something as demanding as Ba Gua. From soft to hard is the safest and most assured way to understanding. Check out Bruce Frantzis` "The Power of Internal Martial Arts" for a serious breakdown of what you`re getting into. Good luck!

I have a question, and the people posting to this video seem serious and respectful. As I have grown older, I have become arthritic, and unfortunately, have had some surgery for injuries in my knee and shoulder. Despite my injuries and age (early 60s) I am in good cardiovascular condition. I have been fascinated with BaGua for a very long time. BaGua seems relatively gentle on the joints in terms of training. Can anyone please comment and give me your views on this?

I am inner circle deciple of Master Sun. He is extremely strict when teaching us. He emphasize that each movement shall be accurate and no like other elderly masters. Master Sun still performs all gestures and movement accurately just as he used to be. For entirely movement, he even improved a lot comparing to his 40s, he is really amazing. I think the reason is that he never stopped training for past 10s of years. That's why he is so perfect

I'm currently studying under him and i can tell you that he wants students to learn the movements properly -- hence the emphasis on forms but, once you know how to move correctly, he teaches you how to use those moves and he's the only one who teaches you moves that don't reek of Xing Yi or other arts. The guy learned bagua from Cheng Ting Hua's family; he knows what he's doing, believe me!

No one really knows. I heard a theory about him being a bandit as a young man. he was persued by a number of authorities and took assylum with some Taoist monks. Already being a proficient martial artist, he incorporated the circle walking exercise/meditation with movements he knew. thus creating Baguazhang!

one story I have heard is that Dong Hai chuan learned from several taoist masters near 9 flowers mountain, one of whom was Bi Cheng Xia. There are records of circle walking practices in taoism for thousands of years, for longevity and developing chi. Often done around a tree to absorb the chi from the tree.

I think he's referring to Dong Hai Chuan. Most Bagua Zhang lineages trace back to Dong Hai Chuan in some way. Emei and Wudang also have quite a few martial arts from outside areas that have been assimilated by the locals into their own flavor. For example, you can even find wudang luohan quan and hong quan (both old Shaolin styles).

There are many different styles of Bagua mainly differing on the different masters who have taught it. Originally it said that Master Dong learn Bagua from someone else plus circle walking was around long before Dong's Bagua. It's sad that there is only claims and no solid truth.

You surprise me in quite a good way. I actually agree with your last remark. Forgive me, most mma fans dont seem to see beyond the hype of the sport, nor have classical training. You seem to have quite a fair grasp on the classical and mma. Quite refreshing. Honestly, like you I would love to see a classical martial artist or two be willing to get into a ring just to silence those who say the classic moves cant work etc etc.

i agree with you but some moves like eye gualging eagle clawing the throat things of that sort are cheaper moves,only should be used when life is seriously threatend. like i train iron fist/hand for about 10 years now and i wouldnt want to hit any average person without a glove on becouse it would be cheap for me to do so but if aproached by someone with wepon only way i would. these guys i believe would do well in the mma they dont need the cheaper moves to win in a sports fight.

cheap moves? A very narrow view. It seems that MMA fans simply see anything out of their sport to be 'cheap'. Even within early UFC there were moves that are now illegal. Were they 'cheap' then? I'm sorry MMA is no place to display full martial skill because MMA though amazing is a ring sport and real martial arts in any style as far as defense goes are meant to have power enough to do serious injury or kill, though you always want to avoid it. I get what you are saying but thats a fact.

Listen, I know what you're saying and to an extent agree with you. However, martial arts is also about internal, personal development and MMA is a sport based around physical development for the purposes of defeating a single opponent in accordance with the rules of the ring. Of course if this guy was pitted against today's top fighting athletes in a cage they're highly likely to destroy him; but if they met in the street the scenario would be much different (to be continued)...

sum good applications but i think i'll stick with xing yi. it looks like it would take years to be able to use such complex applications efficiently in a fight whereas xingyi applications are so simple and effective you can fight with it after about a year of training. no offence to bagua practitioners.

Despite what you seem to think, a "real fight" is not what you see on UFC. Most real fights (as in fights between average people) are clumsy and awkward spectacles to behold. That's the whole thing the style looks like a dance and is based on evasive foot steps. It's designed to circle and confuse the attackers, notice how he walks in a circle? You (mma too) are the center of that circle. Simple evasion and counter. Come at me with intent to kick leaves your balance leg open to a 'trip' out. In MMA there are over 20 foul strikes and techniques. Virtually all of which were just used in this video to hurt the attacker. I think the MMA guy would be crying for the referee after about 3 seconds. MMA is not no holds barred anymore it is now a sport and as such has no place in "as you put it" real fight situations. Grappling is designed for 1 on 1 wrestling sports but is useless if being attacked by anymore than 2 people. Bagua on the other hand is designed for multiple attackers
