I never said I was an expert, and you have been missing the point of this video. Who are you to judge technique is my question? I have not studied conga but Giovanni Hidalgo, Mongo Santamaria (R.I.P), and Poncho Sanchez have been friends of my family since before I was born. Personally knowing these masters, all I know is that I doubt anyone who has been commenting on this about technique is probably not a world renowned teacher or artist. Point is your not qualified to make that statement.

puyambia is right about the band aids - certainly about scaring beginners. Modern micing and amplification is a long way from what Mongo Santamaria had to deal with. I like poncho and he has a place in my heart but his technique is old school and his arrangements too bluesy for my taste these days. Take any poncho track and compare with versions by pure afrolatin percussionists or fania artists. They swing a different way. BTW Poncho didn't post this, it's ripped from a commercial DvD

Tienes razón, el concepto de mejor es relativo, pero aun así me parece que su ritmo es algo repetitivo, se hace percibe demasiado fácil que cuando va a empezar sus golpes tiene que empezar con 2 fusas, y lo hace como más de 5 veces y ya aburre, ya que un solo se ha hecho para ponerle personalidad y ritmo para bailarlo. Así, y dime a que estilos te refieres cuando dices que hay diferentes estilos ¿te refieres a personales o a que hay estilos con nombre propio?

kisas no me explique bien, cuando se traba, no me refiero a q se retrasa en el tiempo o algo así, sino que se queda en juegos que cuando son muy repetitivos, aburren, y el solo tiene que ser más creativo. Pero bueno = no voy a cambiar de opinión, los solos de tito puente y de algunos otros timbaleros aquí me parecen mucho mejor que esto.

yo digo que debes poner atencion, ya que no se "traba" como tu dices; talvez te estas confundiendo con la sincopa que te mete la intencion de que hay un retraso en la entrada en los motivos; si no me parece que hay que escuchar mejor

Para aclarartelo mejor, no hablo de que sea un mal timbalero, pues toda la canción toca muy bien y hace muy bien los cambios en los ritmos, pero hablo de que se trababa en juegos de golpes repetitivos en su solo, claro está que no en todo. Y es cierto tienes razon, se debe respetar la clave y el compás, pero los otros los estilos que mencionas no dejan de hacerlo, así hagan 20 golpes = lo siguen respetando.

obvio que hay diferencia por que hay diferentes estilos, esto no se trata de hacer muchos golpes sino de tocar bien y respetar la clave y dar la correcta acentuacion a su respectiva sincopa, te puedo decir que dos golpes por compas serian mejor que veinte. Piensalo

With that said, people on these posts need to recognize AND ACCEPT the fact that yeah, International Style Latin Ballroom is not typically danced by many hispanics, and that's OK. Social latin dances (salsa, merengue, cumbia, bachata, etc) and latin ballroom dances are not the same, so get over it. Respect them both... any good dancer will. They have different purposes, and typically different audiences. I dance salsa at the clubs and latin ballroom at the competitions, and it's good.

Although my heart will always have a soft spot for salsa (the first dance I learned after living in Puerto Rico for a bit) which I danced for years before trying ballroom, I TOTALLY agree that international style latin ballroom is much, much more difficult. There is a strict precision that is not required to dance salsa, due much to the fact that ballroom is syllabus based, whereas salsa and other social latin dances do not require.

Those dances you mentioned are the original inspirations, as well as influences from Africa, but these Dancesport (or, Sportdance in Europe) are highly-refined advanced versions. Much harder. They incorporate "merengue action" only better. It takes a lifetime to accomplish their techniques, and only a few hours in a club for yours.

There people dance for visual picture,they use different techniques.There is so much small figures,every step has a secret to do it perfectly.All these people are incredible and strong,i personally believe that they crazy about dancing and can dance every dance,also i'm 100% sure that all of these finalists would dance 100x times better than your 'latinits' from club. For me to dance salsa or bachata in club is a piece of cake. And i didn't learn it as it comes from inside of every dancer.

dude...every single one of the people good at latin ballroom dances can EASILY learn any dance like salsa,merengue,batchata,etc..they are so much easier...much less technique,you just have to learn some steps and shake your ass,no offence...i am a D class ballroom dancer and i still can learn how to do a salsa in maximum 3-4 hours...for the dances that i am doing i have been practicing for 5 years and i still suck compared to top class ballroom dancers...so it's the other way around
