the movie, yes, the book didnt really give that perspective. cuz he really did it just because of something he wanted to do for various reasons. but he didnt write the happiness only shared thing till a few days before he died, and even then its not neccesary that he realised that, i think its more of he realised how lonely he was at the time. cuz (it doesnt neccesarily say this int he movie but it kinda implies it) he did try to go back after only a month. unfortunately shit happened...

He made a difference in the lifes of lonely people....I feel what he did was amazing...but he also made some stupid descions....but amazing. Happiness is only real when you share it with sombody...take a backcountry trip to your local national park for a week, and experience the loneliness of the wild.
