Squads vary from department to department. Like someone said, FDNY squads are pumpers that are also trained to handle Hazmat runs. In the LAFD, a squad is a large walk in rescue that responds to Hazmat runs and structure fires. In the L.A. County FD, a squad is a two man paramedic unit mounted on a pickup truck chasis (like on Emergency!). Squads almost always have some sort of basis in rescue.

These squads are technically one single unit. They never are separated. They respond together to all calls. I am assuming they just added an a to the snorkel to help identify the 2 parts of the one unit.

Chicago does that b/c of the size of the streets and to horrible traffic. Plus they get 2 pieces and an aerial out of it. They run together and never leave each other! I know this b/c I am from the burbs of the Chi-town. CFD is very unique in all around apparatus specs.!

Hey goodwill, you make a good point. That could be what happened. If you listen carefully you can hear two guys talking, but I cannot make out what they were saying now. I don't understand why they would have put a new cab on it though as Ron Howard's production company spent a small fortune rebuilding all the trucks used in the movie so they were almost as new.

Thanks for the comments! I just wasnt sure what to think being told one thing by someone who should know but looking at it just didnt add up. My only thoughts if this officer was right was that the cab was changed after the movie was made which seems unlikely.

Smokeeater, you are right. I thought the ladder was a mack but I do know that the ladder on it was off of a pirsch. If you collect the Code 3 diecasts you can even see the Pirsch logo on the ladder. The cab was obviously a mack though.

Ummm...unless it was used in the factory fire, I don't remember seeing a Pirsch ladder in the movie. The only 3 I remember, was the IH TDA in the beginning, an ALF Century RM (I think it was a Century) on a run during the bar scene, and the Mack CF RM used throughout the movie.

Actually I would like some input from anyone who knows. The Pirsch on the right does not look like the one in the movie. There was a Chicago Fire Officer present who gave every assurance that this was the ladder used. The front is different but the rest of the ladder is similar.

lol, Pecatonica is just outside Rockford. Thanks for the comments, I wish I could get this camera back but I think after so many months it is unlikely. You never know though. Sony just came out with a HD version but it is almost a thousand dollars so I am gonna save up for that. The picture quality will be that much better. Thanks, I was impressed as well. This was taken with the Sony hard drive handycam dcr-sr42. The quality is a lot better but I had to lower it as You Tube has a limit to the size. Thats why it is kind of grainy on here. Unfortunately my handycam was stolen and I havnt yet had a chance to get a new one. Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. lol, I think you mis-understood. My brother lives in Pecatonica and my family goes every year to his house and to this parade. My brother-in-law asked my dad why he wasnt recording this year with his camcorder when he replied, "These are just the same ones.", meaning he already has these on tape from previous years. It wasnt intended as if the engines were both the same.

Peter Pirsch Fire Truck Plant

This is a video of the Peter Pirsch plant in Kenosha, Wi. This was where all the Pirsch fire trucks were built. It was somewhat like an assembly line as the front of the building is where the process began and they would drive the engine or ladder out the back when it was complete.

Obviously, I couldnt tell you anything other than that as you would have to go to each department for their records. I'm Stationed here in Charlotte, Nc. Our department has a 1954 pirsch arial ladder that still runs great and opperates fine. Its one of 12 and the only one still running. Thank you! It was in the local paper that they were talking about tearing the building down so I just wanted to get a quick video of it. I agree. There is so much history to Kenosha and its sad to see all that made it great being torn down. The only thing keeping Kenosha going is all the Illinois people moving up here. Most of the factories are gone and the ones that are left only low paying jobs. I think it will be interesting to see what will happen to Kenosha in the coming years. I think it is far outgrowing its economy.

Wehn Pirsch closed it's doors there were 3 trucks under construction from what I am told. 2 were nearly complete and the third was in need of the hose bed & bins being completed + wiring, paint, etc. I don't recall where the 2 nearly completed trucks ended up, but the third was completed by 3-D Fire apparatus & delivered to the Osceola Fire Department in Osceola, Arkansas. My department by the way, and the Pirsch is in daily use as Osceola Engine #7.

I know the Peter Pirsch story. The Pirsch family immigrated from Germany to Kenosha in the late 1700s. They were, at one time, one of the first families. Peter was one of 16 children. No, when the plant closed down it just sat for awhile. Someone purchased the building and then used it to refurbish old fire trucks. That business failed from what I understand so those old trucks sitting outside are just someones private collection that probably was intended to be restored.

Your right. From what I have heard, it was inevitable anyways. Pirsch was behind the times in assembly. They built each truck by hand, nothing automated. It was time consuming and not very efficient.

Yes. I am still trying to learn the history of this building but I do know that it is very old. When I grew up in the late 70's and early 80's, I remember my dad driving by there and we could always see new fire trucks being built through the windows and also parked outside.
