i disagree with the person who said all the versions are lacking something. i love most of the versions done on this song. i think everytime someone sings it, it's completely new and brings something completely different. it's a beautiful song and everyone interprets it in their own way and brings different emotions to it

cohen's version seemed to lack something, listening to him sing this i thought he didnt put any emotion into it, which made it a guy droaning out the lyrics for 3 minutes, the singers in the background on his version made it a bit to church for me, just the simple piano (and strings in this version) make the song alot more magical and heart warming. either this or wainwrights version is my favorite

This is much more an intricate song than the piano (excellently played) belies. It is both a rejection of Christianity, but the acceptance of Christianity s a trial he must endure if he simply can have someone in his arms again. I think the song is pretty, but overly indulgent in his dislike for Christianity. He'd be better off offering a better sacrifice. It's Cohen song pandering to the atheists and wiccans. Which is fine, but let's not call it beautiful, because it has hate it it.

The older I get, the more this song means to me. This is PH's best work and their defining moment. Gary Brooker's vocal in this version is superlative. yeah nwa is maybe THE example of good rap that's considered "gangsta." in terms of violence, i think they're sort of a comic exaggeration playing on white fears. the music's so well-produced and the lyrics so catchy and playful, albeit violent, that its tough to believe they are the cold-blooded thugs they portray. i think some rap could appeal to nick lowe fans because of the emphasis on clever lyrics. eric b. and rakim, for example are definitely worth checking out if you haven't heard them...

gosh, that's an awesome memory! No matter how uplifting a song is, if I associate it with a certain time period in my life, I can't help feeling a little sad. I can't help wishing I could step back in time for just the briefest of moments. I didn't grow up with this song, for I recently discovered it, but it definitely sounds like one of those songs that'd be perfect to create memories with. That's why I love it! :)

An awesome song/memory. I was in h.s. w/ this came out & it always put me in a better mood. I remember distinctly listening to it during football season. We had a poor team but tried hard. Rained a lot (upstate NY) but there were a few games played in the sunshine. I remember psyching myself up w/ this in the locker room just before running out w/ the team to take the field. The energy was still in my head as the scene exploded around me w/ fall colors. I remember the moment not the score, ha!

Stumbling onto this video, I feel like I arrived at Mecca. I always loved Burt's music, and especially loved it when he sang it himself. Burt, put out a record of you singing your own compositions. Great song, great bloke. I used to live in Liverpool just round the corner from the house where George grew up. Once there was this little old lady sweeping the street outside the house and talking to a journalist about George. Amazing to think this woman had lived there all of her life and George had gone on to do what he did. She spoke really fondly of the guy. Great bloke!

Totally know why you wrote it. Gervais, Merchant and Pilkington listened to this song live on their XFM show sometime back in 2002 as part of the "song for the ladies" series. I remember Gervias got scared because he suddenly thought that this song might have been a true story. Pilkington expressed that this was one of his favorite songs because its a "story set to music".
